I see a lot of posts about how great the WLB is in-house. In house for 3-4 years at the same company and I feel burned out from the constant stress. What’s y’all’s experience been?

On my 3rd in house job (5 years in house) and have almost never worked a weekend. Early Covid at my last job when we were understaffed was tough, but I’ve found the bigger the legal department the better the WLB is.

Wow OP — are you me?! Been in-house for about 6 months (much shorter than you) and I am also feeling burnt out from the constant stress. I escaped biglaw for better WLB, and although I think the hours are less, the stress is much higher. I don’t know if it’s a function of the high expectations/pressure environment I’m in or I’ve just become less equipped in handling stress. I have constant anxiety and feel stressed out all the time. I’m actually considering a career change to something less demanding (still trying to figure that out). I would happily take less money to get a less stressful/pressure environment.

In my opinion, it’s a different stress. I struggle more in house with having to actually make decisions and operate on my own. Is that what you mean by high expectations/pressure environment? At biglaw, we had a team and structure/oversight when providing advice and work product. For in-house, we are expected to solve problems quicker and actually provide actionable guidance or work product in short turnaround times.

Depends on your role and how big the legal team is. It's a diff kind of stress, especially once you become agc - more people management, budget concerns, looking at the bigger (legal) picture rather than just doing what you're told

Y’know what’s crazy to me is that the best lawyers, in terms of technical skills and dealing with people, get promoted into managerial roles. Yet, they give us ZERO training on how to manage, delegate, and tread water.

I’m not in-house, but I talk to my clients often and all I will say is you are probably doing better than most. My best man got burned out and he just stopped caring. Literally told people he couldn’t do stuff or they had to wait. They kept promoting him, giving him options, and all of it. He did his job, he just stopped caring. They loved it. Super weird, but maybe try it?

I haven’t gotten a single nibble on my remote in-house applications. Are there certain states that living there would make me an automatic no? I could use some perspective from my fellow 🐠: had an interview with a Deputy GC a little over 2 weeks ago. They said at the end of the interview that they were going on vacation so it might take a little longer than usual to hear back. They did not provide a timeline for next steps otherwise.

Is this code that they want to move the process forward with other candidates first, or am I overthinking things? Should I follow up or just let the process play out?

Hi bowlers! 2020 grad & spent the past 2 years working for USACE. I love the job/WLB but for personal reasons I’m moving to NYC in Aug. I’ve been applying to all the in-house jobs I can find (not trying to study for/pass the NY bar in 2 months). Snag is I feel like I’m not making it past HR. I don’t have a fancy degree, but I did graduate top 15%, was managing editor for Law Review, & have 5 years military exp. prior to law school. Anyone willing to chat/vouch for me to get me in the door? TIA!

Waiting to hear from an in house job and received another offer from a firm - it seems highly likely that the in house job will give an offer but would it be acceptable to reach out and inform them of this pending offer to gauge their timeline? I don’t want to keep the firm waiting or let the offer lapse.
