Generally I like their designs. If I remember correctly, many of their movements are just rebadged off-the-shelf designs from ETA or the like - this is good, because it’s easier to have it serviced, but makes the prices harder to justify compared to micro brands that will come with (effectively) the same movement.
They do have some watches with in-house movements these days
Historically the lower priced IWC watches were heavily modified ETA derived movements, but the newer models are all shifting to in-house starting with the Pilots series. The next model series to get in-house movements from the bottom up are the Portugueser and/or Portofino lines.
As someone that’s actually opened up a IWC ETA based movement, they’re fairly heavily modified compared to something found inside a Hamilton etc.
I’ve got a few IWC watches including the Top Gun Chronograph and Portugueser Chrono - never had an issue with either and servicing is easy (but not that cheap) anywhere in the world.
I inherited a IWC Mark XV from the early 2000s.
Still my favorite watch in the collection. Perfect size and feel and super versatile.
The Mark XVIII is 40mm.
My Mark XV in the picture is 38mm
