It is so interesting that you say BCW is not diverse when to me it’s the most diverse senior leadership I’ve found. Out of the top 20 positions(all the Chiefs) the breakdown is pretty great:
- Female CEO
- Black male US President
- three LGBTQ members
- East Asian (Indian) female - head of Healthcare
- two black woman (DEI and head of brand practice)
-Jewish woman (Marketing)
- head of Global market leaders represent those areas well Latin America, Asia, Middle East, and Europe. Though currently male led, the previous Presidents of EMEA were female.
Totally hear you AS, it wasn’t til Chris mentioned this behavior that it opened my eyes to teams doing this. And he explained to me how tiring that can be.
In regards to BCW specifically, I do believe the company heard from staff around the agency and created the Polycultural unit which is a volunteered team of diversity experts (all levels) which is who you would reach out to when those situations/focus groups arise. A lot of young staff want to be heard and this is a great way for them to get known and work with many teams. But not for everyone!
It sure as heck might not be perfect, perhaps your voice is what we need to make sure that you are focused on the business you want to work on. I know this small chat will make sure I think twice!
I interviewed there as a Black woman last year (pre “the awakening” as I call it). It wasn’t the right fit for me as it was for a consumer health care role and I had another opportunity that was all consumer so took that instead. That said, I loved the team at BCW and didn’t feel like being a POC would be a deterrent or would hold me back. It’s unfortunate but being the only or one of the few at the top is where the industry is at right now. Questions I haven’t been shy to ask have been directly about DEI, recruitment and retention of POC at all levels, what their agency is doing to make the industry more inclusive, and how they rank where they are today. Answers to those are beyond telling if you know what to listen for (performative action and celebration of small triumphs). Their receptivity to the question is equally as telling as well. Trailblaze new paths and take up the space you deserve unapologetically.
I love this answer. These are great questions for all industries honestly.
Hey, OP, why not ping Carol Watson, Chief Inclusion Officer? She’s a fantastic human being and - pretty sure - open to chat.
Yeah, looking to hear more about the US experience. I’m based in LA.
Nice to know things are solid overseas.
No dirt here but just wanna give you support for thinking of and asking this!! I just had an interview process with another agency that I found really compelling (cool work, people seemed genuine) but I would’ve been the only POC in the agency’s mid to senior levels and I just didn’t feel like taking on that labor rn. Good luck I hope it works out either way
THANK YOU, I don’t feel like taking on the labor of solving all the Latinx problems or being the token Latinx in leadership.
Non-minorities don’t seem to realize how taxing and exhaustive this is. 🤷🏻♀️
“Any deets on career trajectory as a minority at the agency?”
...😂😂😂 welcome to the PR industry you’re in for quite the ride
