I see my friends in other professions regularly hanging out with their coworkers outside of work. There’s no chance I would ever hang out with someone at my firm for more than a drink after work… is this just my experience or is that just typical in this type of environment?

I don't socialise with my colleagues outside of work too - have zero desire to.

It's a personal choice. There's no right or wrong.

Some of my best friends are at my firm - makes everything that much more bearable.

I have seen both sides to it. I joined as a lateral and often feel like an outsider. The associates are all friends with each other and even with a few of the client GCs. They will still invite me out to dinner here and there. I had a lot more friends at my prior firm. For me, I prefer the separation of work and personal.

Same experience. It’s hard when you lateral. I had a ton more friends and was on friendly terms with almost all the partners in the office at my old firm. Lateraled as a mid level and the experience has been tough but it’s good to get out of your comfort zone (that’s what I tell myself). I’ve tried hard to go out of my way to make friends and it’s helped, FWIW.

I think this is a personal choice. As a whole, I don’t socialize with my colleagues outside of work. I don’t attend happy hours or firm events unless mandatory. Separation of church and state.

I am quite close with a few partners and associates. We go 1-2 times per week to the gym after work, sometimes dinner afterwards. I don't think this is common, most of my friends would never go to the gym with their work colleagues. I don't typically hang out with the lawyers outside of my pod.

Commercial lit! It's a good group.

We’re pretty tight in my group but I don’t think that’s common, we tout it to the summers etc as a sign of our good culture.

I think it’s very specific to your office/practice. I’m super close with some of my colleagues — regularly hang out outside of work and have even taken group vacations.

My class year (across all the groups at the firm) is extremely close—we see each other a lot on weekends and after work. I’m also quite close with partners and associates in my group as well.

I’m pretty close to some of the other associates and we have gone on road trips and international trips together but these are people that I bonded with through being summer associates together.

My mom surprised me at a family friends house to have them tell me their “big news”. Their daughter is pregnant. So I had to not cry in front of the whole family when she knew I’ve been struggling for 2 years and she already knew their daughter was pregnant. I’m super happy for her, just pretty emotional since my sister just gave birth too. I’m not sure how to tell my mom that there was a much better way to handle the situation. Infertility sucks.

Sort of a silly question, but I’m curious about team dinners. How often do they occur on a project with travel? Weekly? 2-3 per week?

Also, are they always at the highest end restaurants (especially in the big cities)? I had a friend tell me that the Partner on their case looks for “the most extravagant restaurant possible” for team dinners.

Incoming BA/A/AC and this was just an interesting question that popped into my head.

An employee came to me in confidence to raise concern about a colleague of hers who speaks often about guns and how many he owns, etc. Based on what she's described, I don't believe this person has been threatened in any way, but it's clear that the situation is making her feel very uncomfortable - especially given recent events. What, if anything, can I or should I do to help? The company is on the smaller side, so there's really no option to move either employee to a different team.

Corp/securities associate and lateraled to a 40-50 attorney firm earlier this year. I’m a non traditional candidate and considered a 3rd or 4th year and make $200k base. Waiting on raise/bonus info but can’t help but wonder if I could be making $100k more at a larger firm and working similar hours. I put a premium on the people I work with and have gotten a good rhythm here as well as built up a good rep so far. For reference I have billed avg. 180-200 hrs a month. Any insights?

Woof. I’m a senior associate at a new firm working with another senior in a different group. I don’t know his particular year, but I’m senior enough to know he’s either +/- 1 year from me. But damn this dude thinks he’s a partner or something, giving me tasks to do (rather than getting it from the partner in my own group) and is pretty condescending about it all. I get we’re one firm working together but wow. How should I handle this?

I don’t think the juniors are entitled, they just want to share in their firms’ wealth. Surely any salary increases for the Classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021 would easily pay for themselves through billable hours.
