Received MBA through Syracuse online program - currently working alongside and above MBA’s from “top tier” programs. Never took the GMAT. Just checked a box.
Might get your foot in the door places, won’t get you promoted.
Let’s say … it doesn’t hurt your career. How helpful it is will primarily depend on the degree holder. At the very least, it helps check the box
There are some really good MBAs from good public schools. GeorgiaTech’s Scheller comes to mind.
Some MBBs have been actively hiring there, so I think it should work out well.
Maybe not as much as M7, but definitely a plus in the career (unless you are above MBA level)
Got an Mba that ranks in the 10-20 range. As a career switcher it helped round me out and build confidence in areas I knew little about (finance, accounting, etc). MBB type firms came to campus, but they had limited spots for my program. Big 4 and most of big tech were on campus. Most BB banks were on campus. So the program got you in the room with the right people, but it was probably more legwork to connect with and impress these folks (relative to HSW). For Big 4, an MBA basically gets you a pre-negotiated salary and bonus (if you recruit from campus) which usually includes a premium. Maybe outside of Top 20, things get trickier if the quality of firms on campus and/or alumni network doesn’t open doors for you.
The main thing is top 20/25 mba programs have access to the jobs that provide the salary to recover from the mba loans
When you start going outside of top 25, than you want to balance debt to post mba income more aggressively.
My take is, the goal is to pay back an mba program in 3-5 years post grad.
If average post mba salary is 200k and you allocate 20-25% of income to paying off debt, than you can afford paying back 200k debt in 4ish years
If average post mba salary is 100k and you allocate 20-25% of income to paying off debt, than you it would take you 8 years to pay back that same 200k debt so you should aim for programs that are only 100k
