Yes! Set the norm. On my team, I regularly say “hey, stepping away for 15m to walk the dog”. Once my team saw it was OK, they felt like they could do it too, and I encouraged them to get a little sunshine in their day or to take a quick brain break. Don’t do it right before a big meeting or anything but by all means, normalize these breaks!

Yes yes yes! Totally acceptable. First of all, no one expects you to be chained to a desk. You need to get your work done and be responsive during business hours, but that’s it. Block time on your calendar for walks if you need or just go take them! Second of all, you should be able to change the settings on your messaging application so that it extends the time it waits until it shows you’re away. I haven’t looked at this for Teams yet but I maxed this out for Skype 🙃. Even if you can’t, I think if you have the Teams app on your phone and you’re logged in it shows you as active (can’t remember as I stopped caring about this). Third of all, how sure are you that your team members aren’t walking away? Unless you’re monitoring them 24/7, you probably just don’t notice when they’re away. Or they have the app and you’re none the wiser!

I cannot emphasize enough that nobody is watching your status icon. Get your work done. Be responsive. Do not worry about pretending you’re always at your desk. I’m much more impressed by my reports they get the job done and enjoy their lives at the same time than the ones that are online 12 hours a day.

You are not in jail pal, although sometimes it may feel like it

I would start by not continually checking in on your coworkers’ status and trusting that they aren’t doing the same for you.

You could extend a modicum of charity by assuming OP is only checking in hopes of realizing that taking a short break is kosher. But also I lol'd so thanks for that.

We are all adults, step away and then come back and work. I think we can all manage are step away time as adults.

Dude, you just posted this in EY bowl and got like 20 answers saying do whatever you gotta do as long as you get your work done. Was that not sufficient?

I take my internal calls while walking outside. Why not?

This, too!

Take as many walks/breaks as you need. It’s your life. What matters is what makes you happy. If you want to work all day and that gives you happiness, absolutely go ahead. But if you want to chill during work and that makes you happy - go do it. Life is too short to care about these things.

I’m in consulting and you can definitely see me out on the street listening to some tunes and doing an occasional pec pop. Enjoy your life and step away from that computer from time to time. No one will crucify you for it.

I step away from my computer all the time. Sometimes I put a paperweight on my spacebar to stay ‘online’, other times I just go inactive. I guess my situation is different from yours because I don’t really care about potential fallout from this. Jaded af over here

I block time on my calendar during the workday to appear out of office so I can go to gym, practice yoga, go for a run etc. At kpmg we are encouraged to do so. I am upfront about it with my teams so there are no surprises.

In the office people would disappear for lunch / coffee all the time. This shouldn’t be any different.

You could just book the time on your calendar and align with your manager that you'll be busy, but you will shift that work forwards or later as needed.

Download teams on your phone if your that paranoid? Or start a meeting with yourself and your status won’t change nor will it turn off your laptop.

Even when I was in the office I’d periodically go do some stairs to get my blood flowing again. Take a walk, nobody cares if you step away for 30 min as long as the work is getting done on time.
