I sent a partner my research this morning. He emailed back saying he made a few changes and attached a black line document. He rewrote the entire thing. I am shook.

This literally always happens. Don’t worry about it. Soon it will be concerning when they don’t make changes bc you will wonder if they even read it.

I remember when I was a summer, I did research for an associate who copied me on the email to the partner, thanking me for all the hard work and being really nice about giving me credit. And then I read it and realized he had actually reached the exact opposite conclusion and just wrote his own summary. It happens! At least he was nice about it.

Receiving a document back with changes is the easy end of the spectrum. Receiving a call from the partner hurriedly telling you all the things you did wrong and trying to write it all down and remember for the next draft - that’s rough.

It’s the norm. Don’t stress. Took me a while to realize that some partners will always rewrite thing no matter how good you are.

It happens.... All the time.

Deep breath, as others have said. When I meet with a junior associate or summer clerk for the first time to deliver feedback, I start off by saying “this is the original of the first memo I ever wrote for the US District Judge that I clerked for a long time ago. The red marks are his. The tiny bit of black typing you can see behind his red marks is my original. I survived. You will too. But the standards that apply to our work are way higher than what you’re used to in law school, and it’s our job to teach you how we do things. We have every confidence you’ll get there.” I then hand over the extensive redline that is necessary every time a junior lawyer submits written work. Don’t sweat it. It’s part of the process. You will be on the other end of this conversation before you know it.

Lol you’re a Summer - this is the learning process. Learn from it. Did you think your work was going to be partner-quality on day 1?

Based on how much I re-write my own stuff, if they aren't re-writing it they probably aren't reading it 😂

like

Why do they always re-write?! Why?????

If my name is on something I want it to look like my work product, so I'll re-write more extensively. If I mean for the junior associate to take ownership, I may leave some things alone but still easier to re-write and send a redline than to say "in this paragraph change x to y" or a handwritten markup and wait to see if they got it right. It's nothing personal

That’s normal. But do set up a time to review and ask the partner what you could have done better or differently to save them from having to make as much revisions. Show them you want to get closer to their style.

What do you think of PwC’s American restructuring by creating “Trust Solutions” and “Consulting Solutions” rather than the regular model of advisory/consulting, audit and tax? I am asking as an intern there right now looking into advisory and they did not let us really know. Also they are cutting jobs they actually want to add 100k workers in 5 years.
