I seriously hate travel already and I’m only 3 months in. Is it too early to quit?

I just think most people come in thinking “oh I’ll spend 4 weeks in California, 5 in NYC, 4 in Florida. And on some weekends I’ll visit Cancun” when the reality is you’re stuck in shit hole Alabama taking 3 flights and driving 3 hours to get client site which is only serviced by a McDonalds and a gas station in a 20 mile radius (extreme I know but just to show expectation gap).

Welcome to consulting. I was single and ready to mingle when I excitedly told them I would embrace travel in the job interview. By the time I started travelling full time a couple months later I was in a committed relationship. But it was the job I signed up for and that was 4 years ago. You get used to it and enjoy the free vacations.

like

Give it a full year to see if you like the travel. There are lots of perks: meet new interesting people, see new sites, points for free vacation, learn to thrive nearly anywhere. If you really hate it and enjoy the drudgery of a daily commute to the same office to the same people then you should start looking at industry ASAP.

To answer some of the questions posed: 1. I have 5 years of experience in this particular space, 9 years in parallel spheres 2. This would be my first short duration employment. 3. My skill set is too specific to name anonymously. 4. My expectations were m-thurs travel, but the job description they sold me on doesn’t match up with the work. 5. I’m the most useful SME on the team and know more than any SC or lead I work with. They need me in every meeting. They ask me to just “do what I think is best” and “run with it.” Cool to be so autonomous, I guess, but I’m sick of making other people look good. At least on the industry side it was clear all the glory was mine. 6. Honestly, it was the 40k salary bump that drew me in, but the physical and emotional toll doesn’t seem worth it. 7. I’m not single. I don’t plan on kids, but I’m in a committed 7 year relationship. It’s not just the sex and her I miss, but domestic stuff like cooking dinner at night and relaxing with my feet up. 8. I know plenty of people who make more than me and get to go home every night. Realistically, I’ll last at least a year due to pride, but I just wanted honest opinions. How is being honest with yourself not “growing up?” To the person who told me to grow, being unhappy in a job and sticking it out isn’t growing, it’s wasting away

Grow up and fast. Embrace the suck and then reap the benefits

What do you hate about it? The answer will tell you whether you’ll adjust or not. Been at this for 17+ years. Married w kids whole time. Job has showed me some amazing places, and some shitty ones. Honestly, I can’t think of anything better than doing this as a single guy...but that’s just me.

There r some perks that come w but I feel u! Especially hating the early Monday flights.....

As with most things, it depends: 1. How much experience do you have? 2. Is your resume showing short term employment or longer durations elsewhere 3. What is your skill set? In high demand? Bottom line is it’s up to you.

Also find ways to make travel easier. Outsource things at home such as cleaning. Buy two sets of toiletries.

like

Better to find something you enjoy now than waste more months/years doing something you hate.

We all have our opinions, but ultimately, for some people the travel is simply not acceptable. OP, that’s a decision only you can make

Did you not know that it came with the job?

Did you sign up thinking you were gonna like it? Want to understand the gap in expectations here

D4 has it. And don't forget the long term projects if you aren't in strategy

For the record, I never romanticized the travel. I just thought it wouldn’t be as deeply depressing as I feel the night before

Wait till you get married and have small kids... you wouldn’t wait to get on a plane!!! 😂

So let’s look at parts of this then (totally random): 1. We work in a thankless industry. No ones coming up and patting you on the back for getting the job done. However screw it up, and you’ll have hell to pay. 2. We work for clients/partners. We’re always there to make someone else look good. 3. With you needing to be there everywhere, there also seems to be an issue managing expectations. They will wake you up at 3AM and drag you to a meeting if you’ll let them. It’s up to you to handle that. Just because you’re the most knowledgeable doesn’t make you their bi#%<. Act like an SME and advise. Don’t do their jobs for them. Do some KT if needed 4) Do you not travel M-R? What’s different? 5) Just because people get paid more doesn’t mean you’re suddenly worth more. Industry valued you at $40k less. Means you’re either overvalued now or industry undervalued you.

Hang in there.. first year can be hard!

And I was grossly under valued at my last company. I moved back to the east coast to be closer to ailing grandparents, so I was willing to take the hit. I don’t see commuting to the same office every day as boring. It would be nice to have free time for my side businesses and get to have a more normal, relaxing life for equal pay. Let’s say 1-2 years then fuck this

Chase Freedom Unlimited vs Chase Freedom Flex. Thoughts on which to get? It seems the only different is the Unlimited gives you 1.5% on all “other” purchases, and the Flex gives you only 1% on “other” but a 5% category you choose each quarter. Both have the same intro offers, including 5% groceries for the first year, and 5% travel thru Chase, 3% restaurants and drug stores forever. Thinking the Flex is the better pick out of the two but maybe im missing something

Ladies, I had a breakthrough with my boyfriend and I am so proud. I have encouraged him to go to therapy for years. He grew up with a father who is emotionally abusive. He felt like he didn’t need to go because he could just “handle it” (part of the toxic culture he was raised in) so I stopped pushing. Yesterday he told me he was going to therapy to try it out, I said okay, and made him a coffee to go. He came home, hugged me, cried, and read me a list of things he was working on. 🥺💛
