Going this route with the above. Just check the total premiums cost vs the HDHP and factor in the tax savings. Since we’re going to hit max deductible and maybe OOP it works in our favor since the $600/month savings on health insurance for monthly family HDHP is basically the deductible.
Still hurts to take some withdrawals and pay $5k for pregnancy screening which will later include delivery, but it works.

Put an Excel spreadsheet together based on the plans you have available to you. Assume you’ll hit the OOP max under all plans (you most definitely will) and see which total cost is lowest. I actually did do HDHP in the years I had my children because my employer contributed to my HSA account which lowered MY out of pocket total.
Whenever my husband or I change jobs I use the Excel file to calculate which option is best based on total cost.
I have a coworker who just did the HDHP/HSA route when pregnant over the “better” (more expensive) insurance because it somewhat evened out over the year for them. But, I would just do the analysis myself to see what would cost more or less including everything (premiums, pre/post tax, HSA matches etc)
If you are healthy and planning on getting pregnant, than an HMO is the best option.

I did the analysis and let me tell you, those actuaries are good. With a delivery in my area, you’re going to hit the oop Max. So your hdhp cost is basically premiums plus oop max. Looking at the more expensive plans, at GT the premiums are huge. So premiums plus what you spend oop for the non hdhp plans were basically the same! There was virtually no difference in how much I would spend between hdhp and non hdhp no matter the GT plan I picked, given the high cost of maternity. Again, actuarial science did all this math when setting the numbers for the plans.
