It seems very common depending on the practice area. E.g. IP cases tend to settle before trial regularly. *this was in response to the post above* 👆
4th year IP litigator here that has never seen a trial. Can confirm this comment haha
Go watch some criminal jury trials. They tend to move fast. If you are in a densely populated area they may have jury trials running all day long.
It’s different from civil a bit, but you can quickly see different techniques and how juries react (and begin to appreciate both the importance of good jury selection and the fact that all juries have innate biases and assumptions based on their lives experiences - even with the best voir dire).

I also spent six years in commercial lit and never saw an actual trial except one the firm proactively “assigned” me to just for the experience. Plenty of hearings and motions, sure. Although the biggest matters I worked on did end up actually going to trial(s) after I left.
