I started a job before tax season. I have a massive amount of experience, but not with the software the new company used. The company was also preparing tax projections (which I had never done before). The company let me go after 3 weeks. Not sure what I did wrong.

Sometimes that happens. It's terrible when it does. But some companies will recklessly hire people they don't need. It probably has nothing to do with you.

That wasn’t your fault! It takes time to learn how things work at a firm/company 3 weeks just isn’t enough time to learn it all

Sometimes companies have specific needs or requirements that may not align perfectly with a new employee's skills or experience. Doesn't necessarily mean you did anything wrong. It might just not have been the right fit. Take it as a learning experience and keep pushing forward.

While it happens maybe looking at it from a different perspective would help understand what you can change in the future. You’re saying you have a lot of experience in tax but have never done projects. How come? I think that’s pretty common in tax. So maybe your experience is too narrow compared to what this company was looking for

Sometimes experience works against new employees. Experienced employees frequently burn budgets trying to "figure it out". I have an experienced employee who is being outperformed by a new college graduate because the new college graduate asks when they get stuck immediately and doesn't burn any time. They are not hung up on comparison to previous software, knowledge, or habits. Having experience is preferable but only if you can adapt and follow current directions. Also, OP sounds like they didn't interview you thoroughly enough. They should have asked about your experience with all aspects of the job.

I’m sorry to hear that. I wish you the best and good luck finding the next role
