I asked off 3 weeks for vacation, 2 weeks into my job. You have a much better reason than me. Wait 0 more months. Ask off today
First, do you really need this surgery? If it’s solely to try to relieve chronic back pain, know that surgery is more likely to produce no change in pain or make pain worse than it is to relieve it. A pain management professional familiar with the current biopsychosocial model of pain (not the outdated biostructural model) is a much better route. As someone who has successfully recovered from chronic pain, let me know if you want to know more and I’ll gladly connect with you!
Second, if this surgery is an absolute necessity, don’t be afraid to take time off immediately! It will get you back to being you and get you back to being the employee your company needs you to be. If they seem resistant, explain all the ways your successful recovery will benefit them. If they’re still resistant, that’s a red flag that the culture is toxic, and you have some decisions to make about your future at that company.
Hope this helps and best of luck in your recovery.
Healing Back Pain by Dr John Sarno is supposed to be a life-changing book.
Please talk to your manager, they will understand. Health comes first.
Health comes first. You won't have a job if you don't have your health.
Health first. Your decline isn’t worth it for a Job.
Also, in the nicest of ways, it’s probably “easier” to have you absent earlier on in your tenure there Vs later when you’re fully ramped.
I like that.
There will be no job if you are not alive… prioritize your health and wait no more. If you being absent for health reasons threatens your post, you must consider another company.
Just get it sorted so you can go do your job at 100%.
The company will understand, and if they don't, tell them to do one.
Zero months. The answer is zero months and you take care of yourself. I’m sorry you’re in pain and have to go through this. Good luck
Take FMLA, assuming you’re in the US
As a leader, I would be so sad if one of my team members felt they couldn’t prioritize a needed medical procedure at any time. Talk to your manager asap. They will understand.
PTO aside, check your contract / with HR for medical leaves. Sometimes there are paid periods for certain medical procedures.
That aside, your health is a priority nonetheless
If you work for a good company they will lot only understand but encourage you to do what you need. I’ve been w my company for 10 months and have to have major surgery next week and will be out 2 weeks. I was nervous to ask but I’ve had nothing but support.
Thank you for all your advice and support. I’ve scheduled the surgery. For additional clarity, this is not life threatening, thankfully.
If your manager is cool, talk to her first. If not talk to HR first. However before you make any move read your Employer handbook. Also your health comes first above everything.
I took 4 weeks off 3 months in for the birth of my daughter. Was 100% paid and I still have 8 weeks left to use. I only took 4 weeks instead of 8 or 12 because I didn't want to be gone too long but company was fully supportive.
Speaking from the perspective of once being in this position, I informed both my immediate manager as well as senior management to discuss options. My situation was similar, position started in July and the surgery was necessary as the linger I waited the worse the condition would progress and I would not be able to work for a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks with consistent follow-up appointments. In this situation, I was not working from home and additional arrangements were not possible due to the type of surgery (retinal.)
My senior leadership team was very understanding and encouraged to take care of my health needs. I returned to work once medically cleared and the leave of absence was never brought up in any reviews or promotions. It was viewed as a necessity for me to continue my employment and grow with the organization. I hope this helps and wish you all the best.
How about zero? How about looking at it this way - if a woman was 7 months pregnant when she starts a new job (you can’t discriminate against someone just because they are pregnant) she’s going to be going on maternity leave within weeks of starting. No one would begrudge this and she’s not going to feel guilty either.
And neither should you .
Yea take the time you need, they will understand
Health is wealth.
You body is you money maker. If you condition gets worse you could be out for even longer or even for life. You are now around 3 months with the company. I would be straight with them. If they are an understanding company they would seen no issue. If the fight it well look for a diffrend company to work for.
