I started a new job in a new area of law. Other than CLEs and outside counsel I regularly work with providing training, how can I learn this new practice area of law relatively quickly? This is a me deadline. My company is pretty great with my learning curve. But no longer knowing the answer to some questions like the back of my hand, and having to now heavily rely on outside counsel and colleagues, is driving me nuts. Thoughts?

It sounds like you’re doing everything you’re meant to for learning purposes. Give yourself time to learn - and keep soaking in as much as possible via the channels you’re already taking advantage of. Do research on what you’re encountering daily and dive deeper when possible. Ask if there are any books your colleagues would recommend. Good luck with your new job!

Great ideas. Will do, and thanks!

One additional thought to those above is to check out practice guides from your local law library (if it’s local enough to you).

Hi

As a former examiner who just passed the bar, I’m looking for jobs and wondering how I can get PTAB litigation firms to take me seriously without a JD or litigation experience?
I did learn legal arguments in the Uspto patent training academy and I’ve always enjoyed arguing and feel very driven towards PTAB/general Patent litigation work. Starting law school next year in the DC area.
Btw I am the 420th member. So you’re welcome.
Seriously though thank you for any insights or suggestions!

I have a burning question. I have been teaching for over 18 years, which is something that nags me to no end.

Suppose you agree that the provided professional development offered through our districts is ineffective. Why not invest in your professional development by seeking a coach or mentor or even pay for professional resources that would help? To put it plainly, why don't we educators invest in our professional development?

So, I had received a job offer and was waiting for conflicts to clear in my new position before submitting my notice at my current firm. Ended up deciding to quit for personal reasons before then. Mostly, I felt burnout and some family issues. One of the partners at my new firms is close to a partner at the firm Im leaving. How concerned should I be that the partner at the new firm will discuss my taking the position before I leave my current firm?
