I started a solo criminal defense practice last November. I am considering taking contract in a totally different area of law (nursing home defense) to help ease the pressure of not having a full client load. How much do contract attorneys make? Any other considerations other than salary and timelines that I should be thinking about?

I’m sorry, I have no help for your actual question.

But how has your criminal defense practice been doing in these few months since you started it? I’m considering starting my own solo defense firm in the next couple of years. Currently a prosecutor. What did you do before?

I don’t believe there is a set price on how much contract attorneys make; depends on what the firm is offering you and what you’re willing to accept as pay.

What is included in your “contract” relationship? Office space? Supplies? Support staff? That would be a good basis to determine the “salary”.

You basically keep track of your work and invoice the firm you’re contracting with, so consider the time/procedure of doing that. And be prepared for W9/1099.

I have been an adjuster for almost 5 years, although I have loved almost all of my time adjusting and find it fun, in a sense, I am so ready to take my skills into underwriting. Does anyone have any tips for transitioning from adjusting to underwriting? I know this will sound cliche but I find myself to be very passionate about insurance and I do well when interviewed, but it is difficult to get a response for underwriting applications because they all “require” underwriting experience.

Managing attorneys in small firms - how much do you make?

I'm in South Florida. Currently a 6 year associate at a small firm (~12 attorneys, 55 staff). Making a move towards Managing Attorney position that they are considering hiring from outside the firm for. I'm going to make the case that they should promote from within and give me the position. I'm objectively a good candidate for it. Question is... what's a good salary for that position? What do you make? Thanks.

Two years ago took a job to relocate closer to where I want to be...but not sure if being valued and compensated appropriately. It’s a smaller firm, salary $75k, not too much in way of bonuses so maybe $5k, but always step up to plate with assisting management as leader for operational contributions and I meet annual revenue goals around $300k.

Q for associates in boutique litigation firms: When you’ve drafted a complaint/motion/brief to be filed, do the partners allow you to actually sign the filing in your own name? Today, I’m getting ready to file a complaint I drafted when a partner told me to remove my signature & insert his instead. Is this standard?
