It’s your chance to being in your people who are fresh and want to do the work you want to do. But you’re going to have to manage the rest of the organization to make that possible. If you’re up for the blocking, it’s an opportunity to build your own place. If you’re not or you think it’s unrealistic, it’s a huge red flag.
Been there before. Red flag. If you have poor C Suite management, you are set up for an exercise in futility. Sure, you may be skilled at uniting the team, but without action and alignment from above, you will struggle. In my scenario, they found a false reason to fire me when the business was failing from above. Good luck to you.
This exact thing happened to me. I was putting in the right processes, paper (forms), people and even partnerships (since every creative was working completely solo when I got there!), but the C suite had no idea why they needed any of this even amid my best (and delicate) efforts to educate them. Their particular ad business is of the digital “blunt force trauma” approach (which, at least for now does get them results) and when they had problems above, their new Creative Director was the first casualty because creativity is just not highly valued or understood there. Definitely no hard feelings as it was probably the best move for us both based on where they are (and will likely stay). So good luck, tread carefully and keep your resume fresh just in case!
