Projects will suck sometimes as a new Analyst/Associate and it’s even worse during COVID. It’s hard to win work when companies are cutting consultant budgets. It’s not exciting, but it’s extremely important that businesses get their PPP loans and arguably one of the most beneficial projects to society that you’ll work on as a consultant. People are struggling and need help Work pipelines are thin right now. You’ll get on a better project soon enough and at least EY didn’t decide to rescind new hire offers

It’s been two months, you’re fine

like

It just feels like another two months of empty time added on as the work doesn’t add much applicable experience to my field or interests.

Keep networking. As cliché as that sounds, make it known to people who work in areas that you're interested in, that you want to work with them in the future. It may take some time, but once you're done with this work, you might be able to then transition to another project that's more in your wheelhouse. Also, talk to your coach and let them know too. That way they can provide any support with transitioning. This is what I did at Deloitte, assuming EY works similarly

I was mad networking before this haha. Makes me question what the hell happened.

Keep networking. Earn an AWS or Salesforce cert while enjoying those sweet predictable hours.

That’s exactly what you should be doing OP. If you’re on a boring project make use of that time to study.

You will fall behind, you use the network from one project to get to your next. If there is no one you want to network with your time has been wasted and now you don't have applicable skill sets. I've been burned by this project before. Just reporting what I've experienced. If you are technical you may have a shot

likefunny

The journey is long OP. You'll recover like I did (2008 grad)

like

Don’t sweat it OP it’s too soon. I can tell you that we’ve all had rough projects- especially at the beginning when you’re still picking up fundamental skills. We had a new MBA hire last year in our practice that had a fairly specialized skill- he sat on the bench for a while despite everyone else in his hiring class getting staffed, but shortly after COVID one of our practice growth areas really picked up where his skill set came into play and he’s since been on back to back projects. I know it’s not the exact same situation, but there is an aspect of timing and how you’re positioned once your brand builds up, so don’t stress and just get work experience under your belt for now.

like

I understand, but it’s the nature of the job that you’ll land some duds from time to time. You can still focus on building up your brand, which is based on you as an individual vs. what project you’re on, eventually you’ll find an area and projects to thrive in, but even then things change so often in our world that what may be hot one year isn’t the next. I’d say being versatile and getting core consulting experience should be priorities for you, if you want to truly hone SMR skills industry may be a better path.

What group?

Tough part is that I was networking like a mad man before this. I was calling and taking to someone new all the time. Makes me question if it was beneficial or if I was even doing it right.

I’m a new hire and I’m on the same project - we’re in this together

Lmao hit me up with the daily teams R.I.P.

Unless partnership is a longtime goal for you, start looking elsewhere now. Life is too short to spend it on bullshit projects that you find uninteresting. Don’t let someone else choose your path for you.

Feels impossible to pivot to another firm or industry with no project experience under my belt

Senior here, joined at the end of last year and now I’m being staffed on PPP...I’m livid. Left my old company on good terms and I’m half tempted to reach back out and say I made a mistake.

Need advice for resigning while on bench. I already have a start date with the new employer. Should I do a traditional two week notice or give <=1 week notice instead? My goal is to not burn bridges, but I also don’t want to get let go on the spot since I have nothing to “wrap up” besides HR tasks. I’ve read on here that sometimes they will let you go day of and pay you out for two weeks but I don’t see why any firm would do that for somebody not currently performing billable work...
