You in nyc? I left nyc ten years ago and couldn’t be happier.
I’m actually in Dallas in a front office role. With being stuck at home all the time now, we are really wanting beach, lake or mountains. NYC would be out of the question.
After a decade as an allocator at one of the large funds in Austin I felt exactly like you. I was lacking mentorship and wasn’t feeling engaged anymore. My wife and I were looking for exactly what you and your wife want - proximity to the mountains/beach and seasonality so we sold everything and decided to travel the world for six months to figure it all out. Unfortunately, COVID brought us back stateside after a week (and we’re now in CLT for her new job).
Not going to lie - it was one of the hardest decisions to walk away from a comfortable job and lucrative base + bonus structure/benefits but well worth the calculated risk. You’ll land on your feet but you’ll need to model out the worst case scenario, and then make it worse. The struggle to find a job in a new city is tough. Add covid and it becomes infinitely harder so I think the being your own boss is the right way to do it.
Thank you, I really appreciate your input!
Same situations here, I don’t like the city we live in but I am not looking to travel the world or anything, just want a new role where it’s more meaningful and less saying yes to the manager.
