I started to dramatically reduce my calorie intake in hopes to lose weight. Like most, I gained almost 60 pounds during the pandemic. On top of that I hurt my back (herniated disc).

i’m at about 1500-1800 calories. I was usually around 3000 cal. I’m 6’4 and 275 pounds.

I have a fair amount of muscle under my fat. With reducing my calorie intake so much do I run a risk of losing my muscle before my fat?

Yes. It's better to be consistent and sustainable.

If you are worried, lift weights 2-3x per week. Adds more muscle, plus it shouldn't make you to much hungrier. Cardio is a great way to lose fat quickly. Weight lifting is an amazing way to change your whole body.

I just got my medical marijuana card so I’m hoping I can have some pain management and work out again.

I try and go for a bike rides every day

Maybe speak to a registered dietician before reducing your calories by that much. It would probably be helpful for you to know your RMR and have a plan in place, especially since you have a herniated disc. Not the answer you probably wanted but might be the safest way to lose the weight.

Sorry I should've clarified! Yes you want to know how many calories your body burns if you do nothing. They also should be able to calculate the amount of calories you need for weight loss based off of your resting metabolic rate. That way, you aren't just starving your body but doing it safely

That is super dramatic cutting. I eat 1800 calories a day and I’m 118 lbs

You’ll lose muscle too unless you work out (you’ll lose less muscle but you’ll still lose some). Even light weight training will help. Also, make sure most of your calories come from protein

A) I think it’s too drastic and not sustainable - either the weight loss or the management phase and compliance - you aren’t going to lose 60 pounds or undo the last 15 months overnight
B) you didn’t mention what the calories are comprised of - garbage food is still garbage good - you need high protein
C) May want to look into IF or keto - I do neither so I’m not a bandwagon junkie advocating blindly
D) if you put on 60 pounds in a year you weren’t watching what you ate - get back to tracking food and watching macros - of it was stress/emotional eating - address the cause and find alternative ways of managing
E) I have two herniated discs in my neck and still lift six times a week - it’s knowing which exercises to do, how much to push and proper form
F) of you lifted before and are not lifting now - you will lose muscle - upping protein will help but you will still loose on that deficit
G) go back to the protein intake….if you stick to efficient sources (and I wouldn’t advocate solely these but go frame of reference) and *assuming you are eating 1g of protein for target weight - I’ll use 215 since you said you out on 60 lbs this requires per day
- 43 egg whites - which is roughly 731 calories
-10 cans of tuna - 1000 calories
- 8 scoops of whey protein (800-1000 calories depending on the brand)

That doesn’t leave enough for fats or carbs AND you should have more protein variety (grass fed beef, chicken, fish, pork, beans, etc - but I listed efficient for example)

Which brings me back to points A and B

My mom is 69 and going to Physical Therapy 2x a week for her back. She lifts weights 5 times a week. She just works around her back. She is old and a weight lifting newbie, but she is slowly learning how to do things and how much she can handle. I am so proud of her.
Lifting weights doesn't have to mean squats and deadlifts. It is probably the best thing anyone can do for your body. It builds your muscles and it strengthens your bones. Highly recommend it. It may not even help you lose weight the first 6 months, but it will make you look and feel better.

Hi y’all,
I shared an intermediate workout program (Back/Legs/Arms&Shoulders/Leg/Chest split) with a few friends the other day and figured I could also share it with others if interested.

It’s a program I follow outside of my 12-16 training block preps, and if anyone wants, I can share it with them. It’s for strength training.

Also happy to explain what any of the exercises are if someone wants the workouts and doesn’t know the benefit or how to do them.

Feel free to DM me about it

Cheers
