I started working out recently with a trainer couple times a week doing free weights, push ups, lunges etc. and my weight has gone up by 6 lbs although no major change to diet. Is it common?

Muscles also weigh. As long as you're achieving the desired results, it seems fine to me. This is why I always go by how my clothes fit, rarely by scale weight.

Starting a workout regimen causes stress on your muscles, which makes you retain water weight at first. So it's normal to see the scale go up and it does self-correct once your body gets more used to the exercises. If you've gained any muscle, that could also be contributing.

There is also a good chance you are eating more and just not realizing it. So snacking a little more, slightly bigger portion sizes, etc.

If memory serves, muscle is twice as dense as fat and burns a lot more calories per lb. You're probably building up muscle. Check your measurements and keep an eye on that. If you go up 20 lbs but go down 3 sizes.. Who cares about the number on the scale? Lol

Yep. My appetite definitely is bigger when I exercise, but when I consistently work out I weigh about 4 lbs more than sedentary. There’s always some inflammation in the muscles if you’re getting sore and working them hard, so don’t worry about it.

Muscle weighs a lot, so as you’re developing it you may see the scale go up. Also, might be related to water weight since we drink a lot regularly when working out.

If you’re just starting out, your muscles are retaining more water and getting used to the new routine.

But start using a calorie counter and read about fitness like it’s your workstream. Working out is only half of the equation to a healthier you.

I would suggest taking measurements and going by how your clothes fit. At home scales are very inaccurate and muscle weighs more than fat. With that said, weighing 6 lbs more does sounds abnormal to me and you may need to watch your diet.

I think that’s quite common. Weight isn’t the only indicator of progress. It’s normal to fluctuate by that amount any way with changes in water weight and whatnot. With that said, if you have access to it, maybe see if you can do a body composition measurement. That will give you a better overall picture of progress. Great job!
