I found a lot of jokes made in my office very racist/sexist/offensive. Please do not have your fun at others' expense.
Thanks for that EY1. But do people draw the line between mean spirited jokes and just banter among friends, or should the line be don't joke about anything at work besides staplers because "keep it professional"? I could see the need for the later and guess I have to try to tow the line
I'm a black male who makes white people jokes as well as black people jokes as well as any other race. And I take it as good as I give it. I try to stay away from gender or sexual orientation as much as I can because I guess I can't relate to some people's sensitivities. It just bothers me so much that even when I joke with "my friends" there's always someone who jumps into the conversation saying they're offended. I think those people just crave attention and controlling others and are hiding behind this "political correctness" wave everyone's riding right now. As a minority's I guess ou can say I understand sensitivities but some of it is just ridiculous to me
In general, mocking a co-worker behind his/her back is highly unprofessional, but this happens every day to a large extent at almost every firm. Also, a lot of times, the people who make the jokes only found them funny due to the lack of broad cultural awareness.
For what it's worth I think it's okay to make such jokes as long as they're not behind someone's back. It's two-faced folks that I can't stand.
I feel that the African-American concerns are well known in this countries, but there are a lot of other more culturally silent groups who are ignored.
Non white here, My team has no filter at every level and it's pretty diverse, I don't mind those but jokes are meant makes our miserable days better in big 4 ... just be careful who you are joking with ... I told them it's being color brave ...

Taken to its natural conclusion, a workplace devoid of any and all jocularity will result in generic, stale, humorless drones who just exist. No thank you. I do not feel responsible for others' sensitivities nor do I believe we should reward over-sensitivity. Perpetuates the victim mentality. People should not be afraid to live a little. Being PC is the road to an insufferable life. The color equivalent is beige. Step up to the plate, folks - be red!
I crack multiple jokes with co-workers without offending anyone. But my jokes aren't racist or bigoted.
So maybe it's just you.
