I switched from service based company to a product based company. But now its about 2.5 months, and still I am not getting much work to do, is it normal in product based organisation, is ot harmful? Coming from a service based organisation, I use to get hell lot of work, and now suddenly its very less work.

As you are new, no one will bombard you with crazy expectations. Development is comparatively better on product based org. You will get enough time and easy deadlines as delivering a stable feature is more important than just giving a solution to client and charging him..like in service based org.

Also this all may change based on criticality of your project and mood of your manager 😄

In the last 6 months, work is super chill
Ppl tke their time and the best part is they actually know which is a priority, unlike many other organisations or teams who say everything id priority
My manager during 1:1 doesn’t talk about work, instead asks me how’s everything at home
See, everyone knows in a professional area that working like donkeys doesn’t make good results…
So they give you sufficient time

I started to get work after the 4th month, so I had sufficient time and the best part is, my colleagues or team mates they gave me a proper KT which i didnt know existed in my entire 5.5 years Of career !!

Company name plz .i will apply immediately

funnylikehelpful

usually there is a hidden 90 day onboarding plan in product based.. so keep calm

Yeah point

If you are in established a product based company or companies that already released products in the market, then the process is more streamlined and work will be less.
If you go into a company who are in the early stage of releasing the product, you won't be having weekends off also

likehelpful

It’s normal for 2 reasons.
1 . In many firms code freeze may have already happened and new work usually comes from Jan. December is a chill period for US markets .
2. In product company you get ample amount of time to settle down and understand the business . It’s not like service based where only delivery matters and nothing else . Utilise this time to understand the business domain and relax.

What’s the company name ?

like

Great . Share the name and refer me

like

It's not normal. If your team is loaded but you are not, then probably they don't think you are upto their standards. Prepare for switch - before they fire you or put you on PIP.

likehelpfulfunny

PIP is performance based. Why would OP be put in PIP when he is not getting work?

like

Yes,
It's normal , no need to panic.
It might take 6 months sometimes.
As I worked more than 4 product based telecom companies the same thing happens even though I'm on Architect designation.
So enjoy and participate in company activities.

likehelpful

It's normal.. You are part of good culture. Usually first few months will be to get you comfortable. I have seen same culture in multiple top tech companies.

likehelpfulfunny

Things are a bit relaxed in product based companies. Since you're new they might have not assigned more work yet. If you're keen to take more work, talk to your manager and ask.

likehelpful

Are you in a product or captive. A lot of people don't know about captive and they call it product based. Work culture of product based is different from captive.

like

If core product offering is tech = product based (Google, Samsung)
If core product offering is non tech = captive
(Banks, Airlines, Etc)

But imo, both are product based, question is about tech vs non tech offerings

There will be an onboarding plan in progress due to which you are kept waiting or it’s just this season- most people are on leaves and are in holiday mode. So people who may be responsible to get you inducted maybe unavailable and hence the lack of work.

Keep calm, initial 6 months are given to folks to just settle down. Especially if you are from service based companies

Please share the company name, I’ll also apply

like

It's normal buddy.
Just chill 😎

This is one of the perks of working in product based company. Instead of complaining, enjoy it and do whatever you like in that spare time.

likehelpful

This is normal in product based companies, don't worry

I also, switched and was assigned Jira tickets as soon I did my 2 weeks of trainings.

like

But I guess it’s how the work culture is … we just need to engage in all activities and keep ourselves visible always .. we feel we aren’t visible for our work so better to conduct learning sessions / some engagement sessions / doing certifications .. that’s how I am keeping myself busy here

Hello Folks,

My Current co offered me a salary below the market range and I have got it to their notice but finding tough luck in asking them to give me the industry standard range..

I am exploring new roles and when I tell new co abt my expected salary (as per current market standards) they find excuses to not consider the bump and say “ Oh we can give from your current sal “ any tips on how to negotiate and match my pay (as per industry standards) as I don’t want to be underpaid..

Thanks!

The level of shock and anger I’m seeing on my LinkedIn regarding the Twitter layoffs is puzzling. While unfortunate, didn’t we all know this was coming for months? They also get paid / benefits for 4mos + severance (correct me if I’m wrong). And it’s also only like a few thousand people at a tech company. I feel like they have a far better set up for recovery than others who have been laid off already where we all just moved on after seeing the headline. Thoughts?

Im currently studying Industrial Engineering with a minor in management. I’m interviewing currently for consulting, and theres a VC course at my school that seems really interesting but I can’t fit it into my schedule without removing the last class I need for my minor. Would not getting that minor do any harm to me short or long term? Im thinking that if I end up at consulting especially no one will care about a management minor they’ll just look at the firm I worked for.

Fellow fishes, an observation. What explains the sudden rise in salaries in new hires.
In 2017/8, $/₹ was 65. Today it's at 80. That's a 20% depreciation over 2017/8 levels. Now, between then and now, salaries may have been corrected 50%. Factor in inflation, and you will see that the hike is just about 20% over a 4 time period. Doesn't seem like big number anymore.
