I teach in a behavior focused classroom and my goal is to help students regulate their emotions and function in a general education classroom. Any tips for getting those gen ed teachers on board?

Are you familiar with Michelle Garcia Winner’s Social Thinking Curriculum? I push into classrooms to teach lessons. The kids and teachers love the curriculum and it has helped all students with self-regulation and calming strategies

I totally want to support MG Winner’s social thinking curriculum. I don’t teach in an ED class, but I have seen it used very successfully in other classrooms. Also, anytime you can push in to teach a lesson is usually very appreciated by teachers

The less your kids get on their nerves, the more receptive to them they will be. I started by having them spend short periods of time in the gen ed class. The minimal exposure made it more valuable to the student. They were more likely to do the right thing when they were in gen ed.

Maybe have them observe a lesson or practice some of the calming strategies so they see what you are teaching and how it can help regulate all students?

If it’s embedded into the regular school day that helps. My school formerly used Second Step. There were a lot of separate scripted lessons, and I dreaded them. We switched to Conscious Discipline where the strategies didn’t interrupt my daily routine, but rather gave me skills to use throughout the day. I felt much more receptive to that

Zones of Regulation. Tons of resources online, social media - Facebook private group with files & useable resources, you tube videos, etc. it’s a curriculum too! Emotions are normal, you flow in and out of the “zones”. Emotions/feeling connected to a color then coping strategies connected to move zones. I use this concept for students 18-26 years old.

Does anyone remember using Philosophical Chairs as a strategy in the classroom? You know, the one where we teach kids to make a claim based on the evidence they've gathered, then express it in a respectful manner, followed by hearing what the other side has to say, listening with ears open to the facts presented and being prepared to change their mind should they hear compelling evidence to do so? I certainly hope they cling to that rather than mimicking the actions of their predecessors. 🤦‍♀️

Feeling blah. Got an offer and turned it down (I wouldn’t have taken), and told this other company that I got an offer, which resulted in the recruiter speeding up my 2nd interview. After the interview, they said that they’d need another interview and to speak to my refs before going forward, and that if I have an offer, they don’t want me to hold me back from taking it. Mind’s kind of in a jumble after this long process. Thoughts from my fellow fish?
