I teach in an elementary school self-contained autism program. Can anyone share some helpful strategies managing paras?

Make sure they each have a clear schedule for the day and that they know what they are supposed to be doing at each time. I try to switch around the students that they work with (even 1:1s) so that no one gets burnt out and no one student gets too dependent on one particular adult. Listen to their feedback - it can be very valuable! Set clear expectations so that everyone knows exactly what is expected. I try to set a team atmosphere- the kids might ask me who’s in charge, but I just tell them we all are. They need to treat all the adults equally so I don’t want them thinking one is “above” the others. Let them know the why behind things that you’re doing sometimes so it doesn’t seem pointless. Don’t forget to ask them to take data - you cannot do it all alone and it will make progress reports so much easier!

Perfect MES1!

Have them feel as if they are part of the team and do not place them in the corner during trainings. This happens all to often. Paras should be included in PD. Many paras are also the future teacher.

I hate having Paras. It’s like another student and another set of lesson plans. Good luck.

Look into TEACCH . It’s a great program .

I agree, team building is the key. I have weekly meeting with staff to discuss students, behavior strategies and academic progress. This works well and ensures all adults are on the same page.

What adhd medication has worked for you best. And why? I know everyone reacts to each & every medication differently. Also do you stack it with any supplements to help with your adhd symptoms?

I’m miserable in my job and it is driving me to a breaking point. I am trying to network to move teams but I have heard that internal mobility is extremely tough to get and I’m just so, so tired. I’m considering a leave of absence to restore my mental health, but I’m worried about how this might impact an internal move if I were to try to do one after a LOA. Does anyone have any insight? I haven’t been getting any interviews from my external applications

Hello there, Im a graduate Human Resources Management candidate and recently I interviewed for an HR Student Assistant position within the public sector and am wondering if the skills obtained, if chosen, will be transferable to private sector if I decide later on to take that route.
Does anyone mind going over these learning functions and letting me know if these skills will suffice in the private sector? I'd really appreciate it.

I just bought an Alexa for my grandma's birthday. Her old radio broke and she's been kind of sad because she can't listen to her favorite music anymore while cooking, so I thought this would be a good pick. She'll have her favorite music right there.

Later today my grandpa tells me she's not been asking Alexa for her favorite music, but for her radio stations instead 😭😂

I need advice. I teach a Co-Taught class, I’m the Gen-Ed teacher, but my background is Special Ed. My Co-Teacher refuses to teach-(I don’t mean Direct Instruction). She sits in the back of the room and is always on her laptop. She acts as my assistant. My IRR students are failing because she doesn’t support them except near grade posting she tries to negotiate with me to help them pass, suggesting to give them work from her small group class. She only gets up when Admin comes in the room.

I am officially titled as the BD teacher but some of my students also cross over into other areas. I have one student who is self contained purely for behavioral need, not academic. He’s currently injured enough people that I’m about out of paras who feel safe enough to work with him. When he goes south it takes quite a few people unfortunately. Have any of you ever ended up in the situation where you are the only one left? How do you keep the balance with the rest? I can’t teach only one daily.

I am a sped teacher in a high school. Autism Spectrum Disorders are not my area of expertise and I need someone who can help me with behavioural and academic interventions. He has a low average verbal composite and FSIQ on the WISC-5 but after that is very low to extremely low in composite scores for visual spatial, fluid reasoning, processing speed and working memory. The student is duel diagnosed and has a specific learning disability. I am running out of space. See next box.
