Because it gets them through the winter, lol. Yes I am a born and raised Minnesotan. I left 8 years ago and have no plans to move back. Last time I went home for Christmas, I literally thought I was going to die from the cold. It's really a state for people who love hunting, fishing, and boating. Visiting for 1 week in the summer is good enough for me.

Lol I would GTFO - those winters must be miserable 🥶🥶🥶
Why is she asking? Maybe you should let her know, maybe she also wants to move but has the same thoughts as you?
Good luck. My brother met a women from the Midwest while living on the west coast, near where we grew up.
It was a condition of them getting married that they both quit their jobs and move back to MN or WI. It was crazy but non-negotiable.

Same reason people from [insert random location] think it's awesome. It's not an uncommon phenomenon, most people in a given location will likely think said location is great.
I generally agree with that sentiment, though I think Minnesotans are a bit extra about it.

What makes the summers only average to you? My experience/reviews from friends would be far more favorable than that.
The lakes are admittedly great. June and September are also great. July/August get very humid and bugs are everywhere. This year was an exception because there was no rainfall.
Where would you want to move?
Born and raised, would move back if the career cards presented themselves. Putting family ties aside - I like living somewhere with four seasons. Yes winters are cold but public works / roads are way better than other major metros I’ve lived in that get snow and the skyway downtown makes getting around downtown easy without going outside. I’ve found winters elsewhere much less enjoyable when you’re stuck walking to subways and being out in the slush all the time. Housing is semi affordable, at least compared to larger metros. Restaurant scene is excellent. Economy / job opportunities are pretty great. I don’t know - I just think it’s a great place to live and generally like most Minnesotans I encounter
There are lots of places that have 4 seasons without any of them being as bad (or as long) as the Midwest in winter.
Fellow MN resident, originally from a couple other Midwestern states. I’d say that the MN culture is very much an “embrace the cold” culture which is different from other places. I find that it gets me through the winter by skiing, playing hockey outside with friends. Last year was the first year I didn’t absolutely despise winter because I actually bought into it. And imo, summers in the north can’t be beat. That said, I’d raise my family elsewhere too. MN has a very reserved culture given its scandinavian roots, I think you’ll find stronger community ties elsewhere.
we’re flatlanders so obviously you can’t get close to rocky mtn skiing but Lutsen is worth a weekend trip, Granite Peak in Wausau is good too. There’s a few good spots up in Ironwood, MI, and I’ve heard good things about Mt. Bohemia but I’ve never been. Snowshoeing or cross country skiing could be good ideas too. My best advice is to not let winter lock you up inside, mix in a trip or two to somewhere warm and it won’t seem so bad.

I like it in the summer, nice parks and lots of outdoor activities but yeah couldn’t live there. Most I can do is a weekend trip lol. You should bring it up and see if you guys can compromise on a new location!
