I think DCFS should be called for a student and we brought it to the principal but because the students grandmother works at the school they decided to let her handle it. What would you do in this situation I don’t think the child is being physically or sexually abused but I don’t think his living situation is safe or healthy for him?

It is entirely possible that you can contact them and they can take the report and decide it warrants no further action on their part. Simply reporting what you know does not mean they automatically do something. However, they determine that and you meet you moral and legal obligation when you report. Even if they do something it might be provide resources or support.

It’s not your decision whether it is abuse or not or how it should be handled. Once you have reported it (not to admin), you have done what you need to do. You can do it anonymously.

In California, it is your responsibility. Informing your Admin doesn't absolve you of your responsibility. You could actually be criminally charged if something came to light and you didn't follow your duty. Remember, it isn't for us to judge whether or not our fears are justified. The system is in place to handle the investigation. If everyone didn't follow up on their instincts, where would the student be? An example was my reporting an abused child. Previous teachers didn't report it. Therefore, I was the first recorded informer. They didn't visit the house because I was the first. If others had filed, that child would have been given a chance.

Update I did call and make a report

likesmart

Nice job! I called once. The girl was able to tell the family that her brother was abusing her. She was so grateful! We definitely bonded. My mom is a child homicide investigator. I grew up hearing how children were in unthinkable situations-they often ended up being murdered by mom’s boyfriend. If something happened to my student and I knew I could have stopped it-I would have a hard time forgiving myself for not trying to protect my kiddo! You did the right thing!

If you live in Missouri, work in a professional setting and have direct contact with the child or children .....then you are a state mandated reporter. You are required by law to report anything suspicious. If you give it a second thought, then it should be reported immediately.

like

In Idaho any teacher could call and report concerns about a child. I would call and make the report directly.

like

In Illinois you are a mandated reporter. Doesn’t matter what relative you work with. Grandma shouldn’t even be included in conversation.

like

How is grandma going to handle it? I’m sure she already knows the situation and obviously nothing was done

like

I’m not sure I wasn’t apart of the conversation with grandma but from I was told she said she would start advocating more for him

like

You are a mandated reporter. You are not the one who makes the judgement call

like

Same in GA. You are required to report. They also tell is we don’t have to be sure of anything and they really prefer we don’t ask any questions. They will investigate. You just have to make the call.

like

Assuming you are a mandated reporter in your state (as I am): This is a little complicated. You state you do not suspect physical/sexual abuse. However, you also state that he is not in a healthy environment. You have a reasonable suspicion that something is wrong, be it emotional abuse, neglect, substances, etc. You also reported it to administration. The principal is on the hook for failure to report in this case. However, check the laws and district policies in your situation. You may want to consider calling DCFS anyway.

like

The teacher or direct staff also on the hook for failure to report.

like

As a mandated reporter, we are encouraged to call the state if we think, “I wonder if I should call.” I don’t care if the grandmother works at the school, even educators can be abusive.

like

And as I stated just above your comment I did call I work at the school I am not a teacher so I wanted to talk with him first

like

In my district, we don’t take it to the principal, if we think there is reason to call, we call. We are mandatory reporters.

likesmart

I am sorry you are in this position. In my state, the law is clear and discretion is not allowed on our end. We are required to report.

like

I would contact DCFS via the online form. That's the legal obligation of mandated reporters.

like

In Ohio you have to report it

like

Follow the law.

like

You make the call regardless of what administration has to say about it. If the kid is in an unstable situation it needs to be reported

like

I teach for the school system my son attends and I as called by my sons school to tell me they had reported me. My son is autistic and repeats what he hears all the time. He repeated something he heard on YouTube and then told someone I bought him a gun for Christmas (he got two Nerf guns). While I understood why they called, the story he told was so unbelievable that I just looked at the staff in utter disbelief that they truly thought the “situation ” had happened. Clearly I’m still pissed at the school administration (to whom I’ve worked directly with in the past). I would say use your judgement. If you truly think the student is is in danger then call.

In Michigan you’d be a mandated reporter. Family member/employee holds no power in this situation. Call! You can be liable if it was known you knew of the students situation and did nothing. That happened in our district and it truly does not end well for all involved.

If you suspect -report

This is easy, although it seems complicated, ALWAYS call and consult DCFS. They will tell you whether it warrants a report or not.

I need advice, has anyone been in a similar sit? Met a guy on Bumble in March. He had gotten out of a 4 year relationship in December. We dated for 2 ish weeks, on date 3 we made out and touched (no sex but we both came). After the date he tells me he needs time to himself, his mind is all over the place. We’re May and he reached back out (to congratulate me for my sisters baby). Said he’s in a much better place mentally, wants to meet up. CONTd in comments

I have an exit offer to a major PharmaCo, really excited about the offer and company in another state. The problem is that the start date is right when my wife is due with our first child. Normally nbd, but we just found out that my wife has developed a heart condition because of the pregnancy. OBGYN and Cardiologist both have said that it would be ultra high risk for to move before the baby comes and will be safe 1-2month after. Tips moving the start date without getting the offer pulled?

I’m curious to hear from people at other firms what is offered in terms of part time work or alternative work options for people that don’t really care about making partner and might want to work part time. I just had my second child and want to ask to come back from maternity leave on a part time basis but our firm doesn’t seem to have anything in place right now. If your firm offers this, what’s the billable requirement, how much of a pay cut is it, and do you still get benefits? Thanks!

I work with several people with kids and I have noticed quite often that they completely disregard any issues of people with no kids and try to one up work life imbalance conversations with stories of them being parents. It must be hard being a parent but I don’t think people at work should be treated differently or given any additional consideration just because they have a kid. You already get parental leave so If I’m expected to work 12hr I ask the same to be expected from my peers with kids.

Do you have many LGBT friends and do you necessarily care if you do or don’t? I have one gay friend who I catch up with occasionally and I think my husband has two. I never really cared either way about it, however I feel like I’m at that point where you primarily make new friends through existing ones, and they are having children and making other “parent” friends. Between that and living in a SFH neighborhood in the suburbs, I’ve changed my viewpoint over the last few months.
