Ask them.
Fit is so right on my end to the point that I have even worked on similar accounts and have everything they say they need AND more.
They tell me it's between me and someone else. Who gets hired? A white male with same agency years and similar agency type as me. But as far as I can see on linked in he lacks healthcare exp. Which is what made me a great fit.
I don't want to believe it's because of race but I don't know what else to attribute it to.
I'm trying really hard to not believe this but I can seem to identify why he would get chosen over me...
I've found that most people like to be around others who look and act like themselves. Its unfortunate. It's why bias is so subconscious. With every job offer I've received, the decision makers were women, POC, and gay men. Sorry that happened - you clearly should have received the offer.
I’m so sorry for this, but I think it’s about the personality.
As a WOC it affects me to see white women just gel so well, laughing at each other’s jokes and cultural references. I have a POC leader who has a white male partner, and even if he is the one with the most awards/influence, he told me how his partner gels real fast with other white business partners (talking about golf or BBQs in the Hamptons...).
So, I wouldn’t blame it on white vs POC (I don’t think people in our industry are that racist) but I do blame it on ignorance and lack of self-awareness: that the people you prefer are people who have experienced things like you (which is often linked to race).
Also no one has told us in school that what gets you really hired is to be likable. (On top of the everything else.) Not that we’re not likable, but gelling during the interview over our mutual love for baseball or whatever also adds points to what gets us hired.
Good riddance though, you really don’t want to work with someone who doesn’t appreciate you for all the value you bring! Good luck!
