I think I’m done and have lost faith in my org. Today I was asked by sales to get a feature shipped within 2 weeks for a demo. We haven’t completed discovery on this problem so we would be building what the sales team wants. Based on a high level t-shirt sizing building something properly would take a couple of months so getting something shipped in 2 weeks will be a hack job. I don’t know what to do

Is clickable prototype an option? You can do it via a UX tool or html nonfunctional website. Should buy you time to finish building it.

Even figma makes clickable prototypes.

If it's just for a demo why can't you do vaporware?

like

Our CCO/co-founder thinks it’s very likely that they’ll want to try the feature in our demo environment so it has to be a working version

So your options are:
- hack together something to try and make sales happy, knowing it might not work well if at all and is likely throwaway compared to the full feature
- tell the sales team / head of product “no” and hope you don’t get fired

I mean, I hate the first option, but I also enjoy having a job. I’ve hacked together a lot of BS in my day. If your upper leadership tells you to build it, then you build it. It sucks, but this is how 90% of tech companies tend to work.

The best thing you can do is document your concerns, so that you can show proof of “I told you so.”

Also what did your CPO say?

Please note that there’s a fundamental difference between the terms “Try” versus “It Must Be Done”. So, go ahead and try to get it done with high quality and well architected code, but **no spaghetti code**.

Most likely you won’t be able to deliver in 2 weeks. But then, since there’s no spaghetti code, the team will have completed at least 25% of the functionality.

The big risk you take on by writing spaghetti code is that Sales can come back to demand refinements or major changes. Since you own the code, whether it’s excellent or crappy, and you will be expected to make changes as required by Sales.

In my experience as Product Owner, I’ve gone toe to toe with a VP to say “No”. I suspect the head of product is trying to meet conflicting pressures: 1) Sales VP and 2) Dev Team Velocity. So you were told ‘try’ to deliver.

you're in a tricky situation actually - key issue is Sales driving Product Mgmt which can be a very reactive way of operating as opposed to Strategic which is what a PM / Head PM should be driving. The alternative already suggested around rustling up a MVP is good; but depends on how big the ask is too.

helpful

It’s a big ask. However, we’re trying our best to get a very stripped back version shipped in 2 weeks. Not sure how it’s going to go to be honest

Thoughts on becoming a "Growth & New Initiatives PM"?

I was a regular PM managing my own vertical and now have the opportunity for a new role in the org. No promo or cash related, just jurisdiction wise.

I'd be focusing on:
For old product-
-Free Trial
-automation
For new product-
-Building out from scratch
-UI/UX related user feedback
-sales and marketing focus
-use cases and features

Is this a good move career wise? Love being a PM and looking to grow.

Been a PM for 6 years and I feel jaded about the role. I don’t think I add value besides being a product sales person for customers and talking “business speak”. I have delivered features that didn’t require PM work. None of the features I tried to push will be built. I now build what engineering and leaders want. Also we are very short staffed and other than critical features I don’t envision new work. Thoughts?
