Get out of advertising. (My dream)
Just put enough aside to get through a couple of months. The smaller market I work in still has at least ten agencies, opportunities will always come along. And if you think you’re at risk of losing your job, start looking for your next gig before you get fired. Check Creative Ham to see how many agencies are in the city you’re thinking of moving to.
^ Big laugh for comparing LA to a small market in any way.
I'm in Austin, which is comparatively tiny, and this perception is a big issue here when it makes attracting talent from large markets difficult. But, there are still at least a few other large agencies, small and medium shops, startups, and plenty of client side options- smaller markets aren't deserts with one agency in the middle. This fear is just part of the NY mythos, don't be fooled! Also, it's waaaaay easier livin', let me tell you.
Depends on how small the market. You can usually get to know a good number of people if you go to industry things. And I think smaller market places are a little more stable/less cutthroat. And boy do they love hiring someone with experience in the big apple, as they will call it.
Move again or start your own biz
You pump gas ..
I just moved from NY to LA. Life instantly improved outside of work, as well as mental and physical health. But terrified of this too. At an agency now that hired me here but while LA is huge, agencies here are slim compared to NY. My backup would be a marketing, strategy or social media client side role
"What was the name of that truck driving school, Mav? Truckmaster I think it is?"
You haven’t even started there, live a little stop thinking about the negative shit. Don’t let that NY life bring you down
I moved from nyc to birmingham within the past few months and love it. It definitely has an Austin TX vibe. 8 years working in Manhattan was enough for me. You have to be ready for the change of pace-you can't hop as much but there are still agencies. Also, remember you aren't living somewhere for the rest of your life. If you end up hating it, you can leave.
Thanks for asking this I've always had the same fear.
