I think I've been too responsible and it's stopping me getting good briefs.

Why change? It sounds like you’re a highly valued member of the team. And that’s how you stay safe when it comes time for layoffs.

You start saying no to the safe big boring projects. I’ve been in your shoes and it was hard.

Without sounding arrogant, I'm pretty good at what I do. I often crack tough briefs and can manage difficult clients. This has led to a reputation within my agency that means they give me the big, tough briefs for big tough clients or they'll bring me in when teams have tried and failed for a few rounds. I used to take it as a compliment but now I think it's hurting my opportunities as I don't get the more creative briefs because I'm usually tied up making the work that actually keeps the agency going. I'm also not the "responsible" kind of creative at heart. My book is full of pretty risky shit but I haven't been able to update it with anything for the last year because of my current situation. How do I get out of this? Do I go and get a nose ring and start wearing leather jackets?

If they care about retaining you (which they seem to be), you should let your manager know about this. They want to keep you happy and engaged. I’ve had similar favors done for me because I was a high performer, we can ask for anything :) and it’s not an outrageous ask at all. Position it as growth/challenge for yourself and opportunity for the agency.

Is there a way you could influence the briefs? Open doors with the client? Some of my best work came from pro active moves that created a brief.

Keep on doing the responsible work, but furtively look for opportunities to push the big boring clients to unfamiliar places. Maybe the TV and OOH isn’t going to provide a big creative opportunity, but maybe there’s an opportunity for a cool activation idea? Or for something involving social media? Or perhaps you can start to push the client to achieve more cultural relevance through the work they invest in already.

Living it up in the city.

What are some good companies to work for in Dallas?

135k base and I would like to buy a Porsche. I have 20k in student loans and no other debt. Go for it? I'm not even into cars but every time I’m dashing through the Target parking lot and see one, it’s like love at first sight😍. That is my only justification 😂
