I think many would agree the US public education (K-12) system does not meet the expectations we have as a nation. If we paid teachers like we paid consultants, working 15 hours a day would be the norm and we probably wouldn’t have a shortage of people wanting to become teachers. Which means lower class sizes and better results.

Teachers quickly get tenure so you can’t fire the bad ones. Remove the concept of tenure. Teachers also get pensions. Replace those with 401k’s. Have you been in a school building recently? Class sizes are a function of the number of physical classrooms, not the number of teachers.

That’s where your resource reallocation comes in, I used to work at a school in East Palo Alto and most of our kids didn’t have anything outside of school except for gangs. There weren’t any safe play grounds outside of the school but they weren’t allowed to stay on school property once the bell rang. When we got a grant for after school computer classes we had a waiting list that would have filled five such classes. But the grant was just for computers, the teachers were not credentialed. Meanwhile we probably spent more on security to try to keep students off of the playgrounds, field and basketball courts than we did to help them after 3 pm. We had so much support from parents. But the schools district didn’t think these kids deserved special programs because they were “under achievers” - how can you address that type of circular reasoning?

It’s not like they can say, “sorry, that’s out of scope, but we can do a change order to get you what you want and need, it’s just gonna cost more money.”

This is heavily dictated by where you live. Where I live we have some of the top 10 high schools in the country in the local public schools. Students can literally try their hands at anything imaginable and have access to the best of the best. It’s because our community has the resources and the collective desire to make that happen (local bond issues, etc.) where you feel is for kids in areas where there are no resources and parents have to work 2 jobs so they’re never around. Not sure how to solve it, but at some level, helping get parents back home in the mornings and evenings takes the burden off schools to be a catch all baby sitter and frees up family to take on the family level enforcement required for education to work

The issue cant be put on teachers. Family importance and prioritization of learning has as much to do with lagging educational standards as anything

I wasn’t blaming teachers at all, I personally believe they are massively underpaid for the work they actually do. And I agree, through the consulting prism, plenty of times projects don’t meet expected results despite large sums of money being spent. Sure, consultants play a part in that, but the client & the solution also play a role.

Not a popular opinion but education levels decreased with the introduction of no child left behind. Hear me out, all children deserve a quality education but by making schools combine low performing students with high performing students in the same classroom we brought down high performers. Most schools got rid of gifted programs. We needed targeted improvements for all children but what we got was less resources for high performers and more resources for low performers. Also stop comparing our education levels to developing nations because their data is not reliable and they only include test results for highest performers. Heck some counties don’t even allow disabled/retarded children to attend school because they don’t think it’s worth the resources. Is the US perfect? No but we have a good system that benefits 100% of children.

like

Many schools in Fairfield County CT ditched the gifted programs because a) parents whose kids weren’t accepted got litigious and b) lots of NYC people with special needs kids move here since the school system is obligated to provide the right adaptive environment or pay for private schooling - and that becomes a budget buster. It’s not an easily solvable problem, part of the solution would be stratification of the students but I can’t imagine the legal pushback that would create.

It’s snowing in NYC and we’re still open for in-person instruction. Regardless of whether you think school’s should be open, moved to virtual learning, or just closed entirely, when students are asked to engage from home, do you feel like there’s anything that can be done to continue their learning even though they’re not in the classroom / lab?

My daughter just attended a new teacher workshop at a ROE. A Superintendent presented (not hers) and told this room full of new teachers, “Real teachers get to school at 7:00 am and go home at 8:00 pm.” Really?? As a veteran teacher of 26 years, I was appalled! Makes sense why new teachers are leaving the classroom in their first five years and why we have a teacher shortage in Illinois with those type of expectations.

I run an ED (emotional disturbance) program in the high school I work in. I was shown my classroom and that was it. Told to create the program however I want. I do not want it to turn into a study hall (all students on my caseload are at least 80% in with Gen Ed population). And I want to try and get away from point sheets. Any ideas/resources anyone would like to share?

I took advantage of Verizon’s Black Friday deals and got myself the new iPhone yesterday. I’m AMAZED by all the neat things it can do. One of my favorites is that you can grab text from a picture and have it read aloud. This would be so helpful for my students with vision needs and those with reading disabilities. When do we think we’ll actually see this technology in the classroom? Can’t very well put “iPhone” on a students assistive tech section of their IEP 😂

We just started using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System in our programs to measure quality of interactions and lesson plans. I think it's been one of the most meaningful tools for providing feedback to teachers.

Warning! This post contains vocabulary that some might find offensive. Please scroll past if you feel it might disturb you. I was called upon to read aloud from this book "Allegedly", which has been given rave reviews, during a break between lessons in a 7th grade math class. I'm a former Marine and correctional officer so blushing isn't a thing for me. I read it aloud. I welcome all opinions and am especially interested in views in support of this novel, which would not have been my choice.

High school math teachers... any suggestions on how you all are “sharing” calculators? We have classroom sets. We have tried Desmos online, but the kids prefer hand helds. How are you all sanitizing technology without causing damage? Are you covering them? Looking for ideas.
