I think my analyst is going to quit. I thought they were crushing the game: great work ethic and product, good attitude and sense of (slightly cynical) humor, one of our best analysts. Turns out all smiles and good attitude wasn’t working for them. Feel terrible about it. One for the analyst, two for our team, three that I had any part in it.
Part of me says suck it up. The other - prevailing - part is super concerned. So, check in on your juniors at a real level. The kids are not okay.

Would be lying if I didn’t think about un-aliving myself during my worst stint as analyst. There’s a reason those office windows don’t open.

Squeeze whatever remaining utility out of them like a rag 🥴

Seriously though, why not have a talk with them, be entirely transparent, and see if something could be worked out. Improving their quality of life just a little bit can go a long way...

likeupliftingfunny

What I don’t understand is that none of this is new. When I was an analyst - which was well within the last decade - we pulled all nighters frequently, “thought about un-aliving ourselves”, relocated, moved to PE (which is the same sh!, different field), got screamed at and worse, etc. We’re sickos who kinda love it though and we’re still here working long hours and making good money. What changed when seemingly nothing as changed?

(And to be very clear, I actively make an effort to treat my juniors better than I was treated in hopes it does eventually slowly change. In this case in particular, I tried everything I could think of, protected weekends, managed upwards, gave public praise, checked in, shared workload, etc)

I’m a first year analyst, and my boyfriend is a first year software developer, he works 40hr weeks and his TC is $200k, and he tells me my work environment is toxic. (I like my job) There are other jobs out there that are more appealing to young people.

He’s an analyst -they either quit now or a year from now. No banking team expects long term from them. Plus all their friends from college are quitting their gigs or working remotely from Bali so it is hard to compete with that. Pay in banking is good but at that level it isn’t worth the hours and few of these kids really see themselves staying in the game long enough for the pay to be worth it. Takes a long time usually - trust me I’ve been on this ride for 26 years.

You're right. Crush 'em! 🫠

Of course check in on them ;( - I’m an analyst and life is so far from good, working 12 hour days is not easy. So many of my class is either transferring offices to solve the “problem” (or trying to be happier) or just straight up quitting

likefunny

What would help this? Practically speaking, given that the system will not change over night.

Everyone is running from my work. I wish more people would realize they literally need to treat people better. I left my job for a new one after few incidents signaling higher ups care zero and just see you as a $ taking up resources

like

You said you think they're going to quit. Sounds like there's still time and opportunity to intervene. Why not sit them down and tell them what you've told us. Recognizing their hard work and showing genuine appreciation is a great first step toward mending and salvaging that relationship.

like

I have tried this and I genuinely believe the analyst knows I’m appreciative but has other concerns (thankfully I don’t think they are quitting because of me, but if they are then I’m delusional). They asked for 2 days off this week to really check in with themselves, which is of course the right thing for them to do. Just hope at the end they are back on the team and we are able to more more cognisant about work load/well-being going forward.

like

In my department VPs are always shocked when analyst put in their 2 weeks just because they are good performers. I have friends that have had seniors ask them what they need to not quit and accommodate things like WFH or moving locations.

like

everyone I started with have left the team already, and I’m only a first year analyst.

I agree with this but its everyone right now. I feel like we are all burned out and hanging on by a thread. Just check in on people in general.

How do you handle a CD that overrides everything to do with web/UX/UI for their own opinions and tastes? A few months ago the same CD admitted to having no new web knowledge since the mid 90's...

My team and I have provided research/data backed design choices but our CD could care less. We present our ideas in a respectful manner but it seems he interprets it as a threat to his authority. It makes for a frustrating work environment and our products aren't nearly as successful as they could be.

Hi all! I was asked coordinate a local happy hour for my team. The issue I’m having is that I’m currently pregnant and am not sure if I’m comfortable to hang out with strangers. What’s the most professional way to say no without hurting feelings / burning bridges? Or should I suck it up and go?

I just had to turn off my laptop and walk away for the night because I am on the verge/already breaking down a bit. I know the rest of my team had to work later (I peaked on slack) and i feel super guilty and embarrased about not helping. This is the first time I've gotten to a point like this and although I know mentally I needed to do it, I can't stop reading messages from coworkers as stabs at me for ditching.

⚠️Toxicity Alert ⚠️

My previous manager would track us by hours daily, made a fuss everytime anything stretched and guilt us for that and the unplanned leave too unless it was COVID. Hinted him a lot of time, this is problematic but apparently he considered it "standard practice for agile".

Now 8/10 teammates have switched within < 1 year of project start (6-7 months with him) which tbh had good work in our opinion and even team was fun to work with even though none of us ever met in person.

I’m not sure if it’s because he’s “old school” but once had other team mates in his office (all male) for lunch and didn’t invite me (the only female on this team). I thought I had a super progressive team but every day is telling me that’s not the case.

Hello so I recently had a situation. I worked at an office for 10 years. I asked the supervisor for help and she has a tantrum. Starts yelling, what do u want? Ripping up my schedules for the next day. After all the commotion I go to her office to talk to her and she starts throwing away her lunch, mind you it 4 pm and saying I guess I get no lunch today, what can I do for you? What would you have done?
