This is a great discussion, but I’m not sure you’re framing it correctly. Tasks and organization are very important to do things faster, but unpredictability can’t be avoided through them. Unpredictability and spikes in hours usually happen because of the nature of the projects - high stakes, strategic, which are intrinsically more complex - and the sky-high fees we charge. If projects are critical and expensive, very senior clients are more likely to engage, ask questions, Partners are more pressured and want more certainty and details, things go back and forth with the executives, and it trickles down to the team. Best way to avoid that is to work for long-standing clients and/or for confident partners that are willing to push back and take more risks when managing clients

We have an out by six policy which is supposed to give junior staff at least one night a week where they can plan other activities

A lot of it is left to the individual. Personally, I can usually control my hours to under 45 each week but what used to bother me is the unpredictability of locations/projects so I’ve found that maintaining the same routine everyday (yoga 7am-8am everyday, breakfast at the same time, run (6pm-7pm everyday) and waking up and going to bed at the same time (6:30am, 10:30pm) helps a lot from a mental exhaustion perspective

Unpredictability? How are the teams structured and does that at all help with the # of hours or the predictability (e.g. clear roles & tasks assigned from the beg to the end)?
