Does the student have an IEP? Have they been tested? Is there a plan in place? What have other teachers noticed?
Has the child had any RTI Interventions? If so what does the data show? Has the child been more/less successful w/the Interventions?
If there has been little to no success and if the Interventions were given consistently and with fidelity then its time to get the child evaluated.
He/She may need an IEP. No shame in that!
Are the parents helping and supporting the child at home? i.e. helping w/homework? Reading extra minutes at night or doing extra math at home?
Keep in mind that it is perfectly normal for a child to reverse letters, words and numbers up through the end of 2nd grade!
It simply means that the child needs more exposure to the letter, word or number that is being consistently reversed. Same for word reversals like was/saw or on/no, the child needs to practice saying, writing, identifying the letters, numbers and/or words over and over.
If that has all been done, then it’s time to have an Evaluation done. Always remind concerned parents that the testing yields lots of very good information on how the child best learns and that if the child qualifies for SpEd services that they always have the right to say “ Thanks, but no thanks.”
Dear IL Teacher,
Why did you find my response funny?
Kinda harsh don’t you think?
Know that not all children with dyslexia have letter or word reversals. That is a common misconception. There are excellent screeners available; please talk to your counselor or intervention specialist to see what your school’s process is to have your student tested. Good luck.
start documenting and collecting evidence.
In Texas, if you suspect you refer for assessment. I guess it depends on your state.
Don’t have them read out loud to the class. Use technology to have assignments or books read to the students. Test the student with flash cards then mix them up so they can’t memorize them in order.
