I think the US tipping practice makes no sense at all. What do you think is the best solution? (You can pick more than one in the comments)

Continue tipping and pressure lawmakers to pass higher wage laws for industry

Don't allow workers to be paid under minimum wage if they are getting tips. Tips are extra, that's the point.

Stop tipping and pressure lawmakers to pass higher wage laws

Exactly. People who don’t tip are cheap.

Boycott businesses that do not pay fair wages

Eliminate tipping. If you don’t think so, please read the history on the practice.

Pay a fair wage. That felt really obvious.

Best solution... overhaul health care so that wage workers have access to quality health care and as a byproduct have their total comp increased. Germany for example... you don’t tip in large part because every server has quality benefits and are at lower risk of living paycheck to paycheck without tips.

@D1: Yes consulting salary is not significantly higher paid than an average job in Europe, but the number of people paid below poverty or hunger limits is way less. To you it’s “eff that”, to others its basic human rights.
P.s. I’m not from a European country

Stop tipping and pressure employers to increase wages

It’s not that bad - keep the system

Government subsidized server wages

Stop tipping. In the end, they make more money because you think that money is reported? For every $10 they get, you get $6.50. If I could, I would serve myself. It’s just a job that was created that doesn’t need to exist is many places

Um... OK, sure, whatever. You just make yourself that souffle, mmm, k?

IMO, the minimum wage tipping exemption needs to die, THEN tipping can become the "above and beyond" award that it should be. It has gotten out of hand, with almost everyone expecting to be tipped these days. I will never, for example, understand why someone tips the Starbucks barrista for expertly pressing the correct buttons on the automated vending machine on the counter. Especially when they spelled Joe with an X and added a pump of vanilla instead of peppermint.

Some people just think they are entitled to a tip. I tip well for good service (20%+). I tip lower for bad service and sometimes I tip zero for awful service.

I tip and only in cash. If I received good service, I tip more. The only time I don’t tip is if the service is bad. There have been times where my tip was 100%. If I’m doing well enough to eat out or drink out, I’m privileged. In the US Not tipping is obnoxious, lazy and cheap. I understand why it is acceptable in other nations but not in the US.

Continue tipping and pressure employers to increase wages

Awkwardly walk away, locking eyes...

The practice from my own home country: Waiters are paid over the minimum wage (by law). It is customary to just leave the small/ coin change if you paid cash. If you pay with credit card (no tips with cards in most placrs, so you have to leave the tip in cash - precovid), Definitely would be weird to actually calculate some percentage and specifically try to leave something like 7.85 , would just make it a 5 or 10
No one would judge you for not leaving anything.
You would only tip above 10%, if it was a really really good service and you want to show your appreciation, or it was like a special dinner with a crowded table, a very fancy restaurant, etc.

I’m definitely biased but this makes a lot of sense to me

Probably unpopular POV: The service industry (the more direct customer experience facing the more extreme) relies on the exploitation of workers. Specifically making them hustle every time to make a living. Hence the tipping culture. It’s deeply capitalistic. It works because we’re all a bit selfish and want to be served (faster). It’s not the industry itself (ever dined in Paris?) but the culture and people around.

I don't think it's selfish. As an immigrant it took me time to start tipping as per American standards and I got quite lot of looks from servers in that time. I just want a standard service and I wish I don't have to tip for that. Given a choice I would prefer paying 20% extra in bill than in tips.

I’m an industry hire with several years of work experience and I just found out that someone hired 4 months after me at my large firm with the same amount of work experience was brought in one level higher. It’s hard to not be annoyed especially because the person is not always competent. Would it look tacky if I pointed this discrepancy (sans the incompetency) out to my supervisors to try to get additional support for promotion?

Should I be pissed. I was tasked on a consulting project a few months ago. The first few weeks were fine. However all of a sudden my manager stopped communicating with me, stopped giving me any work and would send insulting emails. I tried to patch it over and go above and beyond but he has just increasingly insured that I have nothing to do all day. My work is top notch. I cant believe I have spent the past few months doing jack

** he has also insured to isolate me from the whole office

Obviously there’s a lot of factors to consider, but would you rather take a job at a Big 4 firm where you’re a number but have a lot of resources surrounding you or at a T2 firm where you can own a lot of work but the name is unrecognizable on your resume?
