People will leave cities like NYC and London to move to more affordable large cities but I don’t think it will diminish NYC/London’s status as global hubs.
To do that, more of the industries based in NYC/London would have to move elsewhere which seems unlikely for now.

That would be great. I love NYC quiet and with fresh air.
Type faster please.

Chicago has one of the largest international airports in the world. It’s pretty much a “global” city by any definition. It’s also sick as a dog right now.

CD1, what’s the point of the link, sorry I didn’t follow. I’m saying Chicago isn’t busier than London because Ohare + Midway < Gatwick + Heathrow.
Airport traffic is important in introduction a disease but is not really a vector for spread within a city compared to a subway or bus.
Art Director, my bad.
Large cities like London and NYC have been getting hit hardest by pandemics since .... forever and they haven’t gone away

Well, we didn’t have internet or WFH or the threat of biological warfare back then.
Globalization has made NYC / London essentially unlivable for anyone without significant money

Manhattan has a population density of 70,000. During commuter workdays, it’s up to 170,000 (much higher if you account that everyone is south of 59th Street, despite Manhattan going up to Washington Heights). That’s a perfect breeding ground for a virus. And is very clear why NYC was affected much more than anywhere else.
I don’t think Covid was manmade, but this will definitely give terrorists ideas on how to cause damage via biological warfare.
I just don’t see a situation where we allow cities to become metropolises going forward. We need to have smaller, high frequency centers of population.

I do think commuters / public transportation are are vectors
How is LA not a “global” city?
Chief
I’m not creating the rankings or the term “global city”. People much smarter than me did that and they used methodology I probably won’t understand even if I tried. The threshold i gave (global city) is arbitrary. The conversation i meant to start isn’t about what should land on which side of the threshold - just on whether this is the end of the largest cities.

Nahhh, after this thing is over (hopefully next year w the vaccine), people will want to move to the big cities again

What you mean? We take the regular flu shot each year. That is a vaccine against certain strains of coronavirus (flu).
No it’s not. All this will eventually blow over.
Chicago or bust

I think all of this may really benefit small cities and small towns. Who wants to resign a lease for a tiny apartment during a pandemic?

LA is ranked as a global city but is not as dense as other global cities such as NYC and London with more suburbs and lower density single family homes.
