Took the plunge on this journey last week after getting results from my annual physical. Have never enjoyed eating fruit/veg but also never ate what I considered to be poorly (avoided fried food and don’t comsume sodas/sugary stuff). Thought I was being healthy but numbers showed otherwise.
To preface, I’m a numbers guy, so a series of specific, quantitative, short term goals typically work better for me than long term qualitative goals.
Did some basic research and found that one pound of fat equates to about 3,500 calories. My macro goal is a 30 lb reduction, but my specific micro goal is a 2 lbs a week reduction. Broken down further to 1,000 calories a day burned in excess of what I consume (7,000/week). Found an app that I could use to track calories of everything I eat vs what I burn.
Two biggest things I’ve noticed so far:
1.) It’s incredibly hard to consume 1,000 calories of fruit/veg/whole grains without getting full first. Sounds obvious but didn’t click for me until I started tracking what I was eating.
2.) Alcohol has a lot of calories when you’re not thinking about it. I was consuming probably 500-600 a day just in booze, so have cut drinking from Mon-Thurs (no chance I’m not having toddies on the weekend).
