I took a new job that I thought was a promotion, but after three months it’s clearly a lateral move. Do I discuss it with my new boss or should I just reset my expectations?

@SVP, DI Yes— I got more money, but I *am* disgruntled about not being as challenged. Doing the same work I did years ago that I had moved on from. And I’m not being included on things I used to do constantly (eg staff plans). Money indicated to me that it was going to be a promotion (+$40K). So, unsure how to address this with my boss without coming off as entitled.

If you got more money, your work life "balance" is pleasant, and you aren't disgruntled about not being as challenged, then I say stick with it and use some of that extra time to insert yourself into other projects to push yourself forward (eg new biz or internal committees).

I have been there. Hopefully you chose this role based somewhat on the person you would be reporting to. If that's the case then I would sit and have an honest convo with them. Maybe they don't even realize that you have experience in those areas and could use some help, maybe they have you in mind for other projects down the line that a more demanding day to day wouldn't afford time for. If your convo results in no change to your less challenged workload, then it may be time to investigate other opps. 3 months/90 days is a standard time line for evaluating new hires, why shouldn't it work in reverse too?

OP, that's happened to me too and I used to report to the managing director and write them midnight emails about how I'm doing AE stuff for a 6-figure salary. They didn't care as that was better for them than hiring an actual AE. I left. So yeah, discuss the role's responsibilities, specifically from an actual written formal job description perspective (vs. what you "thought" it was going to be) so it comes across as factual and objective and spin it that you're just trying to contribute to the org to the full scale of your abilities and not just being arrogant or like you're above trenches work. If nothing changes, start looking.

Did you not get a title or pay increase?

How to deal with an exploding offer? I interviewed for a company and was very excited for it. 1 recruiter interview & 1 with a couple team members. Then I got a short term offer a few days later, tried to negotiate and they came back a week later with a final offer. Rate stayed the same but was told I need to answer by next day. Honestly the process has made me so stressed. I'm interviewing with another company at the same time and their process feels warm & they take their time answering
