I tried negotiating an offer but recruiter pushed back hard saying they’re making an offer at the top of the salary band. I pushed again to no avail. My dream is 5-10k more. Is he bullshitting me?

The real question is, are you willing to walk away because of the 5-10k difference?

like

The only way to push harder is if you are willing to walk away.

The recruiter is not the decision maker here, to be clear - he/she will be acting as an intermediary for someone like me who actually controls a team budget (and has P&L responsibility). Your request for 5k extra might seem reasonable to you, but I have a whole team to consider. It’s more than just whether I would be willing to pay you 5k more, though this is important. Are your skills really worth the extra money in comparison to other candidates? If I give you 5k more, does it prevent me making a competitive offer for other open roles in my team? Would the extra 5k throw you out of line with your new peers? Like it or not, people talk - and the last thing I need is a morale problem because the incumbent team now feel underpaid relative to your offer.

Yes, by all means negotiate to maximize what you get paid for moving. But recognize also that there are limits to your negotiating power, and to the patience of the hiring partner. Seems like you now have a clear understanding of where this particular boundary lies!

If you’re still keen on the move, your best path now is to take the offer and then prove through your performance that you deserve a higher salary at the next available point of review.

Yeah... my recruiter didn’t budge at all on salary, and gave a $0 bonus - insisted it was the ‘high end,’ this is what everyone else was getting at my level in same city, and they weren’t gonna budge. She even sounded surprised and annoyed that I pushed back on both base pay and bonus, and acted like they were doing ME a favor by extending an offer and I should be grateful.
I assumed it was just a shit recruiter but had no avenue to talk to anyone else and wasn’t gonna base a serious career move on a small (also ~$5-10k) difference and wasn’t going to let 1 shitty recruiter affect the direction of my career.

In retrospect, considering my pay is still shit Bc increases are mostly % based, maybe I should’ve just applied elsewhere 😂

Dear snowflakes: rest assured that you ARE getting paid what you are worth. If you were worth more, you'd be getting paid more.

No, I’m signing it... but just reflecting on whether I could’ve pushed harder. It was hard to gauge- I’m bad at this shit lol.

like

You should always push for more if you think you deserve it. They most likely have it to spend given the current economy and low unemployment.

like

U have to look at the total comp package and see where the wiggle room is. Sometimes it’s a signing bonus or RSU/equity. I would also make the case that you’re speaking to other companies that are with a higher range and then it puts the pressure on them to provide something to make up for it.

like

Think long game buddy...

like

I recently switched firms. Same thing. I took it although they came in 5k short. Big picture it's a couple of bucks in the paycheck.

like

Thanks guys! But for future reference, what could be going on here? I def think I should’ve asked for more signing bonus if base can’t change. If he repeatedly (by that I mean 3 times) told me it’s the high end- is that a lie? Do all recruiters say that?

like

No. Sometimes they have a budget and target goals for additional hires.

like

I was asking for $5-10k more than they offered. They basically only gave me a $5k higher than my previous salary Bc my previous salary had overtime and Deloitte literally called them to confirm my previous base pay and did a % on top of my (very low) previous base. Claimed I was getting almost a 40% bump when in reality, I would’ve made same amount at old firm, over the following 12 months, as I did in first year at Deloitte... better role though so didn’t wanna pass up.

like

Thank you P1, super clear and insightful!

like

Additional vacation/PTO. 5 extra days isn’t 5k more but it also doesn’t hit their budget the same way

like

How much percentage hike they are currently offering ?

If they really want you they'll pay more. That's a fraction of a week of consulting fees

Usually it takes several layers of approval to adjust an offer once they are at the top of the band. Likely they can go 5-10k more but only will if they know 100% youll take it if and only if they up the pay that amount. Its REALLY embarrassing for the partner to push 2 levels up only for you to reject it.

Had this issue with the company I’m leaving Deloitte for as well — wouldn’t budge on salary, signing bonus, PTO, relocation. I still took it as it was 30% over what I currently make but it has left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
