I truly feel I can never take off. I’m out of office for the next week taking a bar exam and then going on a well needed vacation. After studying and taking another bar. However I’m still getting emails and meetings. So far I have 2 calls this week and I’m out of office.

This is what it will be like for a while. If not indefinitely. Once you earn your stripes, other people you trust can cover for you while you’re on vacation, but you can never really disconnect. Even the most senior equity partners really can’t—imagine what the ultimate client of a big firm is like. Even if you start your own thing, you’re even more accountable—but at least you can somewhat set your own schedule. If you wanted a 9-5 job, you picked the wrong field if big law is where you want to be.

I also have an interview after the bar….

Are you going to be at risk of failing by accommodating this work? If so, not worth it.

Then what was the point of the post? Confused.

I’m unable to focus on work and I keep dropping the ball on some projects. I hate to put this on my personal life but I’ve experienced three family deaths (including a parent) and a death of a good friend all within the last five months. Hey could use some honest opinions on this because I’m still in shock. I was preparing to give in my resignation + 2 weeks from EY on Monday to jump ship to Deloitte. I accepted the offer from Deloitte on Friday, and I just got hit with a bomb today that my brother has cancer and we have no idea what stage it’s at. Should I just rescind my acceptance from Deloitte? I don’t know how it would be taken if I start at a new firm and immediately need substantial flexibility and time off.

Self-directed IRAs. So many questions! Have any of you ever tried a self directed IRA? I’m thinking about it in relation to investing in a company (to the tune of 150-200k) or possibly purchasing a vacation property as an investment in a location we’d like to retire (if I did that, could we use it to vacation personally occasionally in the meantime? Even if we needed to pay the IRA for the rental?) Thoughts? Warnings?
