I hate EVs, this trend sucks.
Perfect car to own forever is a relative concept. Don't worry about what other people think of it. Buy the one you like. Almost all newer cars will last forever if you keep up on the maintenance. Personally, I prefer vintage musclecars with modernized drivetrain, suspension, and climate controls.

Amazing. But not surprised something hand-built in Germany is more solid than something coming off a factory line in Alabama or wherever
Take a look at the 14-16 e250 bluetec. The Diesel engine will outlast that gasoline counterpart and you can’t beat the fuel economy for the size of the car. My dad has one and gets 47mpg combined (city/highway).
Ya, I always liked the diesels for that reason. Something about an AWD diesel sedan...just awesome
Great choice OP! I think the E is a nice practical car thats not too flashy. Im actually looking at trading in my lexus for a 2016 E63
Follow up: I went for a test drive today and ended up buying the E63...wow..just wow 😎
If you don’t mind the maintenance costs of owning German they are amazing to own / drive. Just be prepared for a lot of very expensive maintenance to keep it going.
Might I suggest the ‘Custom Made Shotguns, Italian and British’ forum if you’d like to discuss “quality products that last forever”
Perfect car to own forever is a car where you have a great relationship with an honest and specialized mechanic or you have the know how to do work yourself. I find the new cars need too much programming and electronics that I can’t do it anymore without the computers and tools.
Teslas have 2% of the moving parts in their drivetrains compared to ICE age cars.
A simple google search would have lead you to about 1000 different articles and taken less typing than your post asking me for a source
You want something to last forever, yet you are looking to buy a forced induction German luxury vehicle..
If you like the look of Lexus’ then they are a safer bet. E series is a luxury car by any standard and will have some technology that drips down from s class as well (newer tech is generally unproven). On the flip side it is 2020 and there really aren’t any bad cars still being built, and Mercedes has built enough e series vehicles to get it mostly right. Time will tell on how the electronics last past 120,000 miles. If you want a car for a long period of time, nobody really recommends luxury vehicles though.
