I understand the point of investing in my retirement, but if that leaves much less to put in a regular investment account, how am I supposed to live well in my 30s-50s? Should I just be rich and old?

You can either spend now or spend later. You need to find a balance of enjoying yourself now but not coming up short in retirement.

There are ways of accessing your retirement accounts before 59.5

Invest what you can while you are younger, while also saving for the big purchases (ring, wedding, house etc). As those things happen you can then shift more towards retirement.

Personally I understand the effects of compounding, but I prefer to have a balance of investments for my goals while I am younger, I do not agree with the maxing out of retirement if it means you can’t save for other big purchases.

As others noted, there are ways to access funds from tax advantaged accounts before the age of 60.

I'm 32 and I'm a few years away from hitting coast FIRE. This may not be for you, but I think it's been a great way of balancing the goal of saving towards an early retirement and not having to worry about spending on w/e I want during a time when I would ideally spending the most.

It took some sacrifice, but I'm still relatively young and in a good spot.

It’s not about being rich and old, it’s about being able to not work and be able to live in peace and do what you love.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be when you’re old. I know of folks who retirees in their 40s. Although that is not the norm

If you have a large nest egg in retirement accounts it frees up other disposable income to spend in your 30s-50s. Earlier you build the retirement account the better. If you get to your 40s or 50s and are not on track with enough to retire than it will cause you to need to save a lot more money in those years and may lead to needing to cut back on your lifestyle

Are there any additional tax deductions that Partners can claim compared to regular employees? I hear of business owners being able to deduct so many expenses that corporate W2 employees cannot deduct. Since a partner is the owner of a firm, do they get the more expense deductions that regular employees do not get?

But all do same work.

I'm a noob with bonds, can someone break down ibonds for me in idiot proof language?

Per what I'm reading the interest rate is 9.62% if I buy through Oct 2022. It's a 30 year investment, but I can withdraw after 5 years without 3 month penalty.

Questions:
(1) Is the interest rate fixed or variable over the term of the bond?
(2) Assuming 9.62% is annual return but definitely want to confirm 🤣
(3) Do most people actually keep it in 30 years? I'm looking at 5 years for now and re-assess
