For rising execs we always provide executive coaching to help build and prime our talent for more.
Do a 360 right before coaching so you have things to work on, reach out to an exec in another department and get feedback on what they think you need / where you excel, etc.
Are you looking to do this in your current company or a new one? Are you part of the current chiefs succession plan?
That’s a great career story! My thought would be to make yourself the most obvious candidate for the job- learn the strategy, be front an center for projects, cross functionally be known as a reliable source, etc.
At least to me, our Chief of Staff is someone who has a knack for the strategic business. Someone who sees the long game and makes big decisions.
Read some of the recent articles written on the topic, including one from the HBR. Do some job searches. Both will give you some ideas on what to learn. And it’ll probably show that you don’t just apply for a position like this. An option is to start off as the CoS of a BU or functional leader, but not as a CoS of the CEO (unless it’s a small firm, where this role is probably misunderstood as a role that includes being an assistant). Read, reassess, and see what middle-ground role could be an option for you.
Thanks! I don’t plan applying… I think if our company keeps growing the way it is, our CEO will need a Chief of Staff in 2-3 years. I’m currently #2 in HR, responsible for operations, systems and integrations. So I just want to be prepared to throw a hat in the ring when the position opens up.
Interesting thing about HR is that people rarely see us moving to another function, so I want to be prepared to pledge my case in advance :)
