In the land of ‘make believe'
@pwc1 - if a high COL firm (LAX,SFO,SEA) pays me slightly less for my low COL salary, the 2.5k-5k a year is probably a wash... This is assuming in office visits are required. I already do 90% of my work for offices other than my own...I don't see how this is from the "land of make believe"
As a side note, when I say 100% I mean that i wouldn't mind flying to the office for a few days a month.
Flying to the office a few days a month? Lol expensive?
You need to network with past management that knows you - I kept in touch with mine through LinkedIn / now working remotely- but they would not have hired someone they didn’t know their work ethic etc. We do meet twice a year as a team and for training.
I work in the Houston office but am technically based in NYC. I applied for a job that listed multiple cities and was told I could live in any of them (basically all major offices)
@SM1 & @SC1 thank you all for your thoughts. Very insightful I'm okay with not making it beyond Manager. Just settle in, do my job, do it well and let others do the BD and networking.
My fiance is 90% remote at big 4 and just got promoted to senior manager. He's not tax, but still, it is possible!
I’m a tax manager and I work remotely 95%. I know at least 2 other fellow managers and even a senior manager (all tax) doing the same. It’s really not the land of make believe, quite reasonable in fact. However, Asking to get flown in is a stretch - I fly back to my home office (on my own dime) whenever physical presence or client meeting is needed.
Tax senior manager here. I work remotely and started doing so four years ago as a senior. So, totally doable and also promotable. I go to the office more the higher up I get, but I'm about to draw back on travel for personal reasons.
How to do it? Go in your supervisors office and tell them what you want. Tell them you like the job, want to stay with the company, but need to be home. Be ready with reasons and how it benefits the firm.
Good luck!
Tbh you can’t just hang out as a manager. It’s up or out
Before I left Big 4, I was 90% remote as a tax manager. I will caution that although achievable (took a while for them to agree to this arrangement ), there were definitely downsides starting with not networking daily with everyone else in the office. I did not really care about this, but after a while, I realized it most certainly put me at a disadvantage compared to my peers.
I agree that this should be possible and you should be able to do most daily tasks. However, you should also understand that you will not be promoted beyond manager.
Put together your business case ask to work remotely
Same as EY2, company will not fly me to my base (NYC) if I’m required to be there for a meeting. With today’s technology I am normally able to video conference from my laptop or a video conference suite at the Houston office though. It helps that we have another member of our team that works from Florida as well. If anybody is wondering, I work in Private Company Services tax consulting/strategy
