I want to get a job at a MAANG company. I think I am good enough to work there but I really hate leetcode-like problems. I don't enjoy it at all and the fact that I know it is not needed at work makes me resist spending hundreds of hours solving them. I'd rather spend more time reading technical books and articles instead.
Anyone had a similar problem? Not sure if there is a solution to this.

It shouldn't take 100s of hours. You need to recalibrate your approach

like

Just practice on DSAs thats the key to strengthen your grasp rather than solving hundreds of leetcode problems.

Yeah I have a very similar problem. I'm more interested in solving business problems than grinding computer science problem sets. Doesn't seem like there's a solution, just have to settle with making less or going into management lol

The only solution is to do leetcode anyway. Most people hate it but it’s the only way to make it in

Necessary but insufficient

I think the same 😩

I think that leetcode challenges are used in the hiring process so that HR can reduce their workload while disguising it as something beneficial to the company.

I’m not sure that makes sense. HR wouldn’t have the skills the evaluate the quality of engineer if they asked more real world challenges instead like most of us want

I’m an associate in a busy bankruptcy group (just started after a clerkship) and I’ve started to have to to turn down work because I’m too busy (I don’t tell partners no, but say something along the lines of “I don’t think I’d be able to start on that for a day or two”). CS and SWE is great in that it can be applicable to a great range of fields, to create immensely helpful tools for other things.

What are some areas where SWE intersects with things that help people, country, and the world? Now also add in making a decent living and generally competitive with other SWE “industry”.

Things that come to my mind are government-related, military, some fintech. Sciences have great need of computing, and can have big impact, but income is less clear.

My manager had been saying some REALLY over the line stuff in standup meetings. Truly inappropriate details about his sexuality and also some stuff about my religion etc. We (the software developers) told HR. They spoke to him and he stopped being a weirdo but the company never addressed it further with us. Is that normal? I’ve never been a part of an HR investigation before and I don’t know what to expect

What's the best course of action when you find yourself at a job that's far more chaotic than you assessed while interviewing? Upon starting this job a couple of weeks ago, I discovered between the time I interviewed and my start date they had hired a new CEO, laid off all of their off-shore teams, changed my position to a new hiring manager, and added an on-call rotation to all engineering teams. None of this showed up in my research of the company or my interviews.
