No. If your plan is CISO route I'd stay clear of MBA. I think it's generally a waste of money. Masters in IS might be more helpful - but generally I think consulting while pursuing certs is best way to quickly advance.
As an example. When i meet C level execs -i am able to explain the state of tgeir cyber security using examples from their operations or finance group. I can explain how shit processes and procedures are affecting their productivity and their financials.
From my leadership side...when they talk to me they are talking to someone that gets that the world is not just cyber.
My feeling is the business background would be helpful in upper management
@a1. I would rather see someone do something amazing w one masters than keep getting more and more.
At some point you have to stop training and actually get in the game.
My comment is based on the assumption that someone is getting a masters to do better at work and not for the love the game
I'd be willing to bet a very high number of CISO's don't have MBA's. Also willing to bet it will stay that way for a while. If you're a "school person" go for it. I just can't validate the ROI and personally hate school.
I don't really like school either but if it helps my career progression it's worth it
I agree, but some companies require a masters for upper management
@op. I have an mba and am in cyber. Get your mba (get a really good one) and watch how your ability to land on a project and expand from doing only security consulting to biz consulting blows up
Slalom would you mind expending on that?
And what was your reason for getting an MBA vs another masters degree?
It's hard to stop at one. I'm about to do a third one. I know someone who had 4 masters
Upper mgmt is about having a wide range of skills. The mba is the gold standard in business skills. Specialty majors in the IT field are shit. I have spoken and recruited at a few masters in security programs and i am always disappointed in their tech, business and leadership skills
Slalom that's what I was hoping you'd say. That's my reason for leaning towards an MBA. So it sounds like you felt it was a worthy ROI
If you don't mind, where did you get your MBA and what was your focus area?
@op darden. No focus area.
If you get your mba...my guess is that your goal no longer stops at the ciso level
I don't think it will drastically catapult your career if you've already landed a decent Cyber gig - just my two cents. Slalom seems to have a different perspective. 2 years jumping around different Cyber engagements > MBA
I've only been working a year so who knows where I'll be 30 years from now. I do like business too and love working with people so it could expand beyond security post MBA
OP it also depends what you went to undergrad for. If you were a business major it prob doesn't make sense.
Considering you have only been working for a year. My advice is build some experience 2-3 years and re-evaluate. In the mean time pursue your CISSP/CISM.
