I started with braids. I wore my natural hair in all interviews and had twists as a summer. They will deal.
Thank you everyone! I'm getting my braids!
My career counselor, also a black female, in law school told me something similar. She also shared that a woman wasn’t hired by a firm during OCI because, according to the white male partner, they didn’t like her natural style hair. What I took away from this is to come as I am and if that weeds out opportunities for me - so be it. I don’t want to work where I am not valued or appreciated as I am.
Not of African heritage so generally unfamiliar with different hairstyles. However, it’s totally bizarre to me that given these styles developed because of what works with your hair textures, that you have to somehow conform to hair standards of non-African people. Just do what works for you, and if your law firm can’t deal, it’s just not the right place. If they can’t deal with box braids, would you wanna stick around to see if they promote African Americans? I would not.
Whatever you feel like doing. If they meet you in person with box braids and you’re a little uncomfortable with it, they’ll get used to it from the beginning and so will you. Next time you won’t overthink it.
Do whatever! I took my firm picture in braids. Had braids, natural, cornrows and whatever style I wanted. In 2020 I got sisterlocs. I, too, felt a little self conscious about whether that was an ”appropriate” style for the workplace but ultimately decided to do it anyways and it has all been absolutely fine.
Same situation. Met them with braids. No issues.
Go for it! I work at a pretty conservative big law firm, and have noticed these types dress code “rules” becoming less and less strict. We’ve had associates come to work with box braids — other than noticing how nice someone’s new style looked, no one cared :)
I have locs. You’ll be fine.
We are no longer living by white beauty standards. We are going to do whatever we want to do, as longer it makes us feel good. So do you, they will adjust. #saynotowhitesupremacy #saynotoracism
You do you.
The career counsellor can do one.
Get the braids.
Pro
Get the braids. White people have no clue what is or isn't appropriate.
I wore braids in law school. I wore braids when I worked on Capitol Hill. I wore braids when I worked as an associate. Family told me not to. I did it anyway. Everything was fine.
Wear the braids if that's what you want to do. I think they are far more acceptable than they ever were before. Besides, it's their issue, not yours. They should get used to it now.
What about hair for black men? I have been growing mine out and have it in some twists. I’m a bit apprehensive about whether it will be accepted or not.
