You’ve been there for a month? How would you even know they don’t have strategy work you probably haven’t even met anyone yet.
They do, it’s just not accessible for me to do unless i luckily get placed on an engagement. I don’t have a say on when i get placed into tech implementation or when i don’t
You should try to transfer to ACN strategy or Bloom etc. If unable to, you may need to think about how you are presenting your strategy toolkit +/- if this type of work is a good fit for you
Before transferring to ACN strategy, a stepping stone would be try to network and get on an ACN strategy project. Realistically speaking also, the industry has shifted and true corporate strategy work that everyone in consulting strives to do are much rarer than they used to be. Big 4 and ACN has even less share of the pie
From experience, going to leadership saying that you want to do “strategy work” has very low success rate. Partly because every analyst comes in saying that, and also because the scope is too big. Instead a better (focus) strategy would be to find a niche within the scope of strategy and target that specifically (e.g. market positioning). Makes it much more clear to the leaders what you want. Once you’ve proven yourself and developed your network, you’ll easily be able to pivot again. Good luck
OP, Many strategy projects have a mix of MC with SC people. You listed a huge variety of strategic initiatives you are interested in. You aren't going to find single projects that are that broad.
We don't work with startups, doing a week of channel work then a few days of pricing strategy then some product strategy is simply not how large firms work.
I did a startup and retired after we sold it. I came to consulting to work on really hard problems that are deeper.
Taking a company from idea to funding to building revenue from $0 to a few hundred million in revenue is different. It requires flexibility, fluidity of changing direction, and focusing on solving many problems "good enough".
Helping a company selling in 130 countries with thousands of distributors modify their channel strategy is an unrelated problem to a startup figuring out how to decide on Central vs Regional sales.
Both problems are key to success, but the scope is hugely impacted by the scale of the company.
To be blunt, your interest in strategy is great, but you are not experienced enough to be more than an individual contributor on these larger problems.
So, network with strat and MC people doing interesting work. Make yourself known for having powerful insights on the projects you are doing.
What group are you in?
Worked at a big 4 before, then went to a startup where I was doing a lot of strategy work at all levels and this is where i realized loved it. Lasted there only a couple of months, and they closed right when corona hit which is why i had to grab the first available oppt. Really wondering if fucked myself over by coming to ACN.
Also, I wouldn’t say you fucked yourself coming to ACN. Our name does hold some weight in some regards and you can utilize whatever skills you have built here in the future. However, it sounds like you did not come into our strategy practice, so maybe start networking there to make connections in that space?
Networking and finding MD support in strategy here at ACN will be the easiest “strategy” pivot you can make without an MBA in strategy consulting.
It’s true if you are looking at strategy consulting, however if you make the jump to industry there are strategy positions within companies that from what I have been seeing do not all require MBA. I am in the same boat as you, I like big picture work, but do not see value in an MBA.
You should try the exit opportunity bowl.
What practice are you in at ACN?
strategy and consulting / Products.
I’m with ACN w/ an MBA focused on strategy.
Please let me know when you find out. I have long term mindset and love empiricism. Yet the gig so far has been focused on short term deliverables and shoty methodology.
