Same OP - the options I’ve seen are transferring at your firm, or doing your masters abroad. I tried to relocate directly with my new job to Europe, but it’s tough right now with Covid. Aiming for next year if things get better. It’s just harder rn with the pandemic.

like

Agree it’s harder to do transfer right now but it’s also a good time to evaluate opportunities abroad

Have you looked in your intranet to see the global open reqs. ? I did NY to Europe with D, pretty simple process in my case. You can either go the global mobility or local contract route. Pros and cons in both.

Will try to stay factual and brief to be helpful (1) Global Mobility: no need to resign, your home firm agrees for you to go overseas for a determined amount of time. You have to agree to come back to your home firm when your time is up unless home firm agrees on extension. More political to get approved based on where you want to go. Home firm basically pays you to be away so likely wants to benefit from you being overseas. Example - harder to venture into another line of service that may be more appealing to you. Harder to find Global Mobility opportunities on Intranet.I view this option as a temporary transfer. (2) Local Contract - to the extent you find an open req and the hiring team likes your candidacy, you will need to terminate your employment with US firm and get hired by local firm. That in itself is not at all an issue. Provides flexibility to venture into a different line of service. Not bound to promisses of coming back within a certain timeframe. Coming back to US may be more difficult if you burned bridges, though you can come back in another line of service if you like the one you scored through your local contract. I view this option like a permanent transfer. ** disclaimer - I took the Local Contract route after doing my homework (which explains the observations I listed above).

Attorneys with the firm often send firm-wide emails advising of in house openings with a corporate client, and solicit recommendations or resumes of qualified candidates. Usually the client contact is a hiring manager for the position. How do I show interest without completely shooting myself in the foot? While I ultimately do want to exit the firm, I also don’t want to be openly broadcasting my intent to leave by telling the firm attorney(s) that I’m interested. Thoughts?
