PG County, MD for Black American, Silver Spring/Montgomery County/Northern VA for immigrant Black/1st-2nd generation Black. Woodmore, Bowie, Kettering, Fort Washington, and Mitchellville are the cities in PG County to look at. I’m from there if you want to chat.

What about joining jack and jill?

Just join the local Jack & Jill in your area. That’s what my parents did and and my group still keeps in touch. Especially over the holidays when we’re all home. I loved it growing up but as always, not all chapters are the same. Only disadvantage is you have to be invited by a current member. You can’t just apply.

I am from a suburb outside of LA but I didn’t grow up upper middle class at all. However, I travel a lot for work and the best places I’ve seen … MD, DC, Chicago.

like

DMV for sure

like

I think you'd have options in the DMV (where I currently live) or Atlanta (where I was raised), both have options for a good balance

like

Live where you wanna live and sign up for Jack and Jill LOL

like

Hmm I’m in LA and it’s effectively a sign up sheet if anyone needs a referral in LA, hit me up.

I feel the same way OP and my friend recommended PG County. She lives in that area now and loves it but I’ve yet to visit and see for myself

DMV - PG county. NY/NJ - New Rochelle and Montclair. Living anywhere and being apart of Jack and Jill and/or the Links

Is private school an option?

Yes.

Are you open to any city in the US lol? Or just areas in Tennessee? Also, what is your background like? Are you divine nine, Jack and Jill? Are you African American? This just helps a little to understand what might be best

Oh yeah. Didn’t know there were 9. Lol

Dmv!! Specially PG county (Bowie and upper Marlboro area) or Moco county. Some black folks are in Howard County (Columbia area) but it’s a predominantly white area (so is Moco but Silver Spring area is quite diverse).

PG county MD is the most affluent African American county in the country. I’d definitely suggest it.

PG county/DMV, Baldwin hills, Atlanta suburbs

Which Atlanta suburbs? 😩

Join Jack & Jill. I grew up incredibly isolated, either racially or economically. My chapter meetings could be up to an hour away, but J&J provided a sense of normalcy that just didn’t exist anywhere else in my life.

My mom was a founding member of the chapter where we lived, but the easiest way to get involved is to reach out to the nearest local chapter, either via their website, or the national website

Current comp is near the top of the band for a role I was offered. If I jumped I would be taking a ~7% increase while I was hoping for something closer to 20%. Is it possible to counter and push past the band? I was offered a raise during my interview process so the original jump of 15% was decreased to 7% based on my new salary.

In a predicament need some thoughts: I’m getting offered a new role (not a promotion, just a new role within my project) that has more lead level responsibilities. It seems if I take this role and do well at it, I could potentially get promoted mid year or end year. Now, this is coming at an interesting time when I was already looking to transition to a new company - an immediate transition will get me a quicker salary bump that I would otherwise have to wait a bit to get at my current company

I’m curious what the opinions are on the process they have seen or used to get promoted. I’ve never had it happen in my career this way but in my mind, your work speaks for itself, you advocate for yourself, ask for a promotion when it’s not been offered. Then you get promoted after you make your case if you do qualify. The way I’ve seen it (& a reason I’m leaving my current company) is where they only promote people when they’ve threatened to leave or received a different offer. Thoughts?
