I want to request feedback (I am a staff 1 about to roll off my first busy client and feel now would be the time) but I hesitate to seem “weird” or “uncool” to those above me. Is this a valid (cont.)

I’m in advisory, so not the same, but if any of my staff scheduled a half hour feedback touch point with me, I wouldn’t see it as a bad thing. Actually, it’s my job as a manager to do that. I’d say be flexible about timing, as those above you generally have other stuff going on, but aside from that you should do it.

Got it. To be honest I hate the formal feedback system we have something similar and have to use it every 30 days or something like that. I personally always rather have the conversation, because you can then dive in more/less into certain areas depending on your strengths and areas of improvement. Seems the request system is more specific. I’ll let someone from that firm give more intel around that.

Not uncool or weird at all. Requesting feedback right at the end of a job (or season or project) is the perfect time because fresh in everyone’s mind. Plus if you are a staff 1 you need feedback. Please ask.

like

Hell no. If someone doesn’t take the time to let you know how you are doing, they don’t deserve you and you deserve a better team. Feedback is essential to all your work and if no one wants to take the time and do that with you, then you need to find the people who will take the time and evaluate you fairly so you don’t keep thinking about how you did. If it’s not explicit, then it never happened. If there is reluctance, then find a better team

like

Confused how requesting feedback would seem weird or uncool. Are you saying it seems early to request said feedback? Or does your firm not require formal feedback?

like

Ah I understand. I personally don’t think it would be weird but gauge you who want to get feedback from and see if informal feedback (as in, having just a conversation about your performance) or formal feedback is better. Definitely ask if you want feedback, I think it shows initiative and helps you to improve

like

You don’t say what firm you work for, but feedback is part of our culture at PwC. It’s never a bad thing to ask. I worked in industry before coming to PwC, and even then I would solicit feedback. It’s never a bad thing to check in and see what’s working and what isn’t

like

If they make you feel bad, it’s a reflection on them and not you

like

At EY it is expected to get frequent feedback, at minimum as a part of any job over 80 hours. If you are only doing it once per engagement you probably aren't getting enough feedback. Feedback discussions are also far more valuable in reality than any written feedback.

like

I can’t imagine anyone thinking a request for feedback is weird. I actually am impressed when people proactively request it.

like

...concern or am I just thinking immaturely? I want to utilize the resources but don’t want to be THAT guy

Go for it. A lot of the time, your senior(s) might not stop to give you feedback unless specifically requested. It's not weird; it's helpful because you're taking one more thing off my mind.

Ad copywriter who’s freelancing outside of agency world, who do I ask for a reference/review from when finishing up a project? Project leader (who I had minimal interaction with) or day-to-day contact who is lower ranking but actually worked with me beyond the initial interview? At an agency I’d go straight to the CD, but this is a consultancy that doesn’t have that sort of structure.

Any advice?: Just finished long term W2 freelance role (since Jan) + I also have a small 1099 side project that‘ll be finishing up in 2ish wks. If we are talking >10k on 1099 (i.e. not enough to justify filing for SCorp) + <160-200k on W2 — is there any real tax advantage of opening LLC vs paying me directly outside of the “protects personal assets if ever sued”, etc? Technically I *could* open LLC quickly b4 invoicing- but dunno if worth $ to do so for such small amount of 1099 coming in?

I was laid off from a resource management role, working with employees approaching or on the bench, working with managers to staff projects, and support functions like report creation, scheduling, etc. Roles like this are few and many large consulting firms have frozen internal hiring. Do you think it would be beneficial to get a SHRM cert? Would that help get a "talent related" HR role? Worth the money? I have a background in recruitment as well.

Told an intern at my firm in a different group that reached out to try and join my team that he should be prepared to work 60-70 hours. He smugly laughed and said everyone he knows at our firm works that many hours (we are a B4 and it’s certainly not the case). Then he proceeded to tell me he leads a 10 person workstream. Then he asked me to refer him to managers to get him transitioned into our group. Posting so others can also get a kick out of this.

What kind of meeting is it when an agency recruiter asks to meet in person instead of a call and hasn't disclosed if there's an opportunity available yet? Do I ask if there is/what the opening is?

Anyone here who has been or going thru arranged marriage prospects, at what point in the course of talking/ meeting do you bring up exclusivity? I am talking to this guy for 3 months given COVID we are not able to meet, but he also seems really into me, we talk everyday and go to sleep talking to each other, but recently I think he is talking to others too and my parents also want me to talk to more guys if I can’t finalize on him. How do I handle this gracefully?
